  • Patent number: 8155444
Abstract: Converting text may be provided. A user selectable element may be used to select a text. The selected text may include a first text within an electronic document and a second text within an image. The second text within the image may be converted to character information by receiving the image. The image may have image character information and an image type. An aspect of the received image may be adjusted based on the image type. Optical character recognition may be performed on the adjusted image to extract character information. The character information may include characters and corresponding location information for the characters. The extracted character information may be evaluated to improve the recognition quality of the extracted character information as compared to the image character information.

  • Patent number: 7916979
Abstract: A user interface can display electronic ink in one section of a display device and corresponding recognized or converted text in another section of the display device that was generated from a electronic ink recognition system. Each page of electronic ink and each corresponding page of converted or recognized text are linked to one another. In other words, each page of electronic ink can be displayed only with its corresponding page of converted or recognized text until a command or message is received that editing of the converted or recognized text has been completed. Once the command or message is received that editing of the converted or recognized text has been completed, then the link between an electronic ink page and its corresponding converted text page is broken. This means that the converted text page can now be saved independently of its corresponding electronic ink page.

  • Patent number: 7721226
Abstract: The present invention provides a glom widget to the pen user of a PC that allows them to access contextual tools near a location where they are writing. If the user selects the glom widget, a context menu drops down that contains several of the most common tools and/or commands that a user creating handwriting might want to access. The glom widget menu can also contain contextual commands that are easier to comprehend and use since they are presented directly next to the content on the page to which they relate.

  • Patent number: 7659890
Abstract: Methods and systems provide for automatic adjustment of electronic highlighter cursor height in response to a determined height of images or typed or handwritten text to be highlighted. The highlighter thickness or cursor height of an electronic highlighter, such as an electronic pen or mousing device, automatically adjusts based on the text or images the user is highlighting. When the user focuses the electronic highlighter on text or images to be highlighted, the height of the text or images is determined, and the height or thickness of the highlighter cursor is automatically adjusted.

  • Patent number: 7577914
Abstract: A method and system are provided for automatically sizing computer-generated workspaces to allow users to enter data anywhere in an available workspace. A calculation is performed to determine the total available workspace displayable by a display device based on the size of the display device. The space required to display user interface objects, such as toolbars and task panes, is subtracted from the total available workspace, and the remaining available workspace is designated as the displayed workspace. The workspace is displayed without the use of scroll bars to create a user experience that the displayed workspace is the total available workspace. Data may be entered anywhere in the displayed workspace without regard to any preformatted page sizes or margins. If data is entered outside the displayed workspace, scroll bars are then displayed to indicate the presence of content outside the displayed workspace.

  • Patent number: 7526737
Abstract: A free-form wiper tool may be used to select and move document objects in an electronic document. A free-form wipe selection may be determined by analyzing the shape of a free-form selection in order to distinguish it from a free-form lasso selection. Once determined, document objects situated on the document in an intended direction are selected. The group of selected objects may be moved, although selected objects may be restricted in their movement, so as to be wiped or moved along only one degree of motion. Selection input may be made using a stylus and a tablet computer, and document objects may include electronic ink.

  • Patent number: 7454702
Abstract: A note-taking application is provided which includes a free-form selection tool. In certain embodiments, a particular selection may be based in part on the speed or velocity of a user selection. The free-form selection tool is configured to provide more or less precise selections based in part on the speed of a selection. The free-form selection tool is further operable to recognize when a user is attempting to retry a selection.

  • Patent number: 7423659
Abstract: A method and system are provided for inserting an object in a void region in an existing object. A user locates the void region by determining whether the insertion point for the object is outside of an edit region. If the insertion point is outside of the edit region, the user is in a void region. The user then inserts the object in the void region. The size of the void region dynamically changes based on the size of the inserted object. The object may be inserted using a computer keyboard or a pen. The inserted object may be text, ink, or any other type of object.

Abstract: Displaying a writing guide for a free-form document editor by detecting electronic ink, classifying the detected ink as corresponding to handwriting or a drawing, and displaying a handwriting guide or a drawing guide in response to classifying the detected ink as handwriting or a drawing, respectively. The writing guides can provide feedback regarding the classification of the detected ink and can be resized as additional ink is detected. The handwriting guide can comprise a writing area, writing guide portion, bullet guide, indent marker, character notches, gesture guide, or sacrificial guide to create meaningful structure within an outline object of an electronic document.
