Abstract: In a method for classifying a sequence of records into events based upon feature values, such as time and/or location, associated with each of the records, feature differences between consecutive records are determined. The feature differences are ranked. A sequence of three or more clusters of feature differences is computed. The clusters are arranged in decreasing order of relative likelihood of respective feature differences representing separations between events. The records can be inclusive of images.

Abstract: A method for facilitating semantic event classification of a group of image records related to an event. The method using an event detector system for providing: extracting a plurality of visual features from each of the image records; wherein the visual features include segmenting an image record into a number of regions, in which the visual features are extracted; generating a plurality of concept scores for each of the image records using the visual features, wherein each concept score corresponds to a visual concept and each concept score is indicative of a probability that the image record includes the visual concept; generating a feature vector corresponding to the event based on the concept scores of the image records; and supplying the feature vector to an event classifier that identifies at least one semantic event classifier that corresponds to the event.

Abstract: A system and method for semantic event detection in digital image content records is provided in which an event-level “Bag-of-Features” (BOF) representation is used to model events, and generic semantic events are detected in a concept space instead of an original low-level visual feature space based on the BOF representation.

Abstract: A method of characterizing images taken during a event into one or more sub-events is disclosed. The method includes; acquiring a collection of images taken during the event; identifying one or more particular person(s) in the collection and the apparel associated with the identified person; searching the collection to identify if the apparel associated with identified particular person(s) has been changed during the event; identifying one or more sub-events for those images in which the particular person(s) have changed apparel.

Abstract: A method for image presentation are provided, in which at least one theme for image presentation is obtained; at least one set of images is acquired for presentation in association with each theme; and a presentation area image is generated for presentation on a display with a plurality of separate presentation objects in the presentation area image; an image value for each of the acquired images is determined; an emphasis score is determined for each of the acquired images. The presentation area image is presented with one of the acquired images in each of the presentation objects; and the presentation objects are animated by moving the presentation objects relative to each other in a manner that attracts more attention to presentation objects that are used to present images having a higher emphasis score than presentation objects that are used to simultaneously present images having a lower emphasis score.

Abstract: A method of improving recognition of a particular person in images by constructing a composite model of at least the portion of the head of that particular person, includes acquiring a collection of images taken during a particular event; identifying image(s) having a particular person in the collection; identifying one or more features in the identified image(s) associated with that particular person; searching the collection using the identified features to identify the particular person in other images of the collection; and constructing a composite model of at least a portion of the particular person's head using identified images of the particular person.

Abstract: A method of composing a multimedia slide show. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises the steps of: selecting a plurality of digital images; encoding each of the plurality of digital images to generate a normal resolution image portion and a high resolution image portion; multiplexing each corresponding normal and high resolution image portion to generate a single high resolution still image; determining a time parameter for each of the high resolution still images; selecting an audio portion for at least one of the plurality of digital images; concatenating the plurality of high resolution still images to generate a video bitstream; generating an audio bitstream by encoding the audio portion; and multiplexing the video bitstream and audio bitstream to generate the multimedia slide show.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for retrieving images relevant to an example image from among a plurality of stored images, each of the stored images being associated with metadata of different types, including retrieving set(s) of images from the stored image(s) for each different type of metadata that are based on similarities of the metadata of each different type with the example image; displaying the retrieved set(s) of image(s) organized according to each different type of metadata; and the user selecting one or more particular set(s) of retrieved image(s).

Abstract: In a computer-mediated method for providing representative images, image records are classified spatio-temporally into groups. In each group, image records are partitioned into clusters and the hierarchically highest cluster is ascertained. The partitioning is between a hierarchy of feature clusters and a remainder cluster, based on a predetermined plurality of saliency features. Feature clusters each have one or more of the saliency features. The remainder cluster lacks the saliency features. Feature clusters are each exclusive of the saliency features of any higher clusters in the hierarchy and non-exclusive of the saliency features of any lower feature clusters in the hierarchy. A representative image of each group is designated from respective image records based on: the respective saliency feature of the highest cluster when the highest cluster is a feature cluster and independent of the saliency features when the highest cluster is the remainder cluster.

Abstract: A method for automatically classifying images into a final set of events including receiving a first plurality of images having date-time and a second plurality of images with incomplete date-time information; determining one or more time differences of the first plurality of images based on date-time clustering of the images and classify the first plurality of images into a first set of possible events; analyzing the second plurality of images using scene content and metadata cues and selecting images which correspond to different events in the first set of possible events and combining them into their corresponding possible events to thereby produce a second set of possible events; and using image scene content to verify the second set of possible events and to change the classification of images which correspond to different possible events to thereby provide the final set of events.

Abstract: A method for organizing visual digital objects into a histogram timeline having a first axis with a timeline representing a range of time organized into separate time periods and a second axis orthogonal to the timeline axis representing a number of digital multimedia objects corresponding to portions of the histogram timeline. Each time period is associated with a graphical metaphor extending from the first axis in a direction along the second axis to an extent that indicates a relative number of visual digital objects associated with the time periods. Each said graphical metaphor comprises event icons which group the visual digital objects associated with the selected time period according to events. The icons are proportionately sized to indicate the number of visual digital objects in the group relative to the total number of visual digital objects associated with the selected time period.

Abstract: A method for generating customized photo album pages for a collection of digital images comprises the steps of: (a) obtaining a plurality of digital images; (b) automatically grouping the images into one or more image sets based on at least one of grouping by events and grouping by people present in the images; (c) automatically profiling the images within each image set according to image content, thereby relating a particular image set to one or more design themes; (d) providing a database of design elements that may be used to generate customized photo album pages; (e) utilizing the design themes generated by the profiling step to automatically suggest one or more design elements from the database of design elements; and (f) automatically generating a customized photo album page layout for each image set by applying one or more of the suggested design elements to the page layout.

Abstract: In a computer-mediated method and a system for supplying image records from a collection, an output request is received from a user. An output is generated responsive to the request by locating a set of image records in the collection corresponding to the request, determining one or more constraints on the output, ascertaining a respective value index of each of the image records in the set, calculating a statistical measure of the value indexes of the set, reducing in number the image records in the set responsive to the constraints while optimizing the statistical measure to provide a reduced set of image records, and providing the output using the reduced set of image records.

Abstract: In a method and system for providing access to a collection of records via a user interface, a plurality of different partitions of the collection are determined. Each partition is based on a different parameter. Each partition has two or more clusters having different values of the respective parameter. Weights are assigned to each of the clusters relative to all of the other clusters of all of the partitions. The clusters are rank ordered by weight to provide a single ranking. The user interface is equipped with controls that give user-selected direct access to each of the clusters of a leading portion of the ranking.

Abstract: An image-record subject is identified for a plurality of image records in an image collection. Then, a sampling change-metric related to a changing characteristic of the image-record subject is identified, and sampling of at least a portion of the image collection occurs at least according to the sampling change-metric to obtain one or more image records for the subset. Information pertaining to results of the sampling step is stored in a computer-accessible memory system.

Abstract: A system and method for automatic creation of digital image albums. A Page Creator Module utilizes a genetic engine and a layout evaluation module. The genetic engine evolves a group of images to a plurality of album pages, based on certain layout criteria. The evaluation module calculates layout criteria and compares them with user preferences. When an acceptable image/page layout has been generated, the image/page assignments are transferred to an Image Placement Module. The Image Placement Module utilizes a second genetic engine, which evolves various criteria to generate page layouts genetic structures. These structures define the location, scale, and rotation of images placed on a given page. A layout evaluation module calculates and compares these layouts with certain other preferences and page requirements. When a suitable layout has been generated, a final album output is generated, which may be displayed, printed, or otherwise transferred for subsequent utilization.

Abstract: A method of identifying a particular background feature in a digital image, and using such feature to identify images in a collection of digital images that are of interest, includes using the digital image for determining one or more background region(s), with the rest of the image region being the non-background region; analyzing the background region(s) to determine one or more features which are suitable for searching the collection; and using the one or more features to search the collection and identifying those digital images in the collection that have the one or more features.

Abstract: A context-based concept fusion method detects a first concept in an image record. The method includes automatically determining at least one other concept in the image record which has a contextual relationship with the first concept and which is to be labeled by a user of the method; and labeling the at least one other concept by the user with a ground truth label to be used in the context-based concept fusion method to improve detection of the first concept in the image record.
