  • Publication number: 20090208772
Abstract: A method of manufacturing welded metal sheets is presented that leaves exposed (i.e., visible) surfaces of the sheets substantially free of any weld marks following welding, without any additional steps performed at the area of the weld following the weld. Thus, manufacturing efficiency may be increased and costs lowered. An apparatus with three stacked metal sheets which may be welded according to the method of manufacturing is also disclosed herein.

  • Publication number: 20090188896
Abstract: A gas metal arc welding system comprising, and a method of welding a plurality of workpieces utilizing, a plurality of individually selectable and separately controlled wire feeds, wherein the feeds preferably present differing wire diameters and compositions and predetermined wire contributions are combined during welding so as to present a weld pool and joint having aggregate properties.

  • Publication number: 20090173720
Abstract: A welding electrode assembly that includes a tip member and a coupling member and has certain self-aligning features which promote proper alignment during operation. In one embodiment, the coupling member acts as a self-aligning joint or connection and generally includes a housing, a movable plunger, and a biasing element such as a spring. During operation, contact between the tip member and a work piece surface causes the plunger to lift from an opening in the housing against the urging force of the spring so that the tip member can become properly aligned with the work piece.

  • Publication number: 20090120913
Abstract: A system for and method of producing invisible welds for a plurality of workpieces, includes the steps of selecting a free-body projection, fixedly securing the projection intermediate the workpieces, and engaging the workpieces with a resistance welding apparatus such that the projection fuses to form the weld joint, and preferably, further includes autonomously securing the projection and an encircling portion of an adhesive tape intermediate the workpieces utilizing a roll dispenser, so as further cause to form an adhesive seal around the weld, and engaging the workpieces with modified electrodes having enlarged workpiece engaging faces over optimized weld force only application and weld force plus electric current application periods.

  • Publication number: 20090107959
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling arc shielding gas during an arc welding operation is disclosed. The method may include the steps of actuating a first valve connected to an arc initiation source of gas to selectively allow arc initiation gas to flow through a mixing chamber; initiating an arc; actuating a second valve connected to a primary shielding source of gas to selectively allow primary shielding gas to flow through the mixing chamber; actuating the first valve to reduce, if needed, the arc initiation gas flow from the arc initiation source of gas; and continuing with the arc welding operation. The arc welding operation may also include actuating the first valve to cause the arc welding operation to operate in a different metal transfer mode when it is desirable, or when the arc welding operation is nearing completion.

  • Publication number: 20090107958
Abstract: A torch for gas metal arc welding includes a torch housing and a contact tip mounted on the housing and having an electrode bore through which electrode wire is fed. A nozzle mounted on the housing surrounds the contact tip to define an annular gas passage between the contact tip and the inside of the nozzle. A shielding gas inlet communicates a shielding gas into the annular gas passage so that the shielding gas flows out of the nozzle. A plurality of auxiliary flow passages are provided in the contact tip, and have open ends arranged around the electrode bore. The auxiliary flow passages communicate with the gas inlet and surround the electrode wire with an auxiliary flow of shielding gas that is closer to the electrode wire than the shielding gas flow that is provided through the annular gas passage between the contact tip and the nozzle.

  • Publication number: 20090078683
Abstract: A method of edge welding a plurality of workpieces particularly useful for minimizing edge deformation and reducing the electrode size, flange size, welding force and current load necessary to produce a given weld, including the steps of forming at least one distending projection along the edge of a first workpiece, securing the projection against a second workpiece and applying a force and current load to the projection so as to fuse a portion of the projection, and a system for performing the method, including a dedicated projection forming fixture, a resistance welding apparatus preferably having specialized electrodes and a controller communicatively coupled to the fixture and apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7506531
Abstract: A tool is provided for forming a dimple on the edge of a metal sheet to facilitate projection welding of the sheet to an adjacent metal sheet. A reversible drill motor has a housing and chuck. A mounting bracket clamps onto the housing and a base is attached to the mounting bracket. A frame is attached to the base and has spaced apart arms. A first dimple forming die is mounted on one of the arms and a second dimple forming die is slidably mounted on the other of the arms. A driveshaft has a threaded end engaged in a threaded aperture of the second dimple forming die and a drive end captured in the chuck. Rotation of the driveshaft in one direction advances the second dimple forming die toward the first dimple forming to form a dimple in a sheet edge interposed between the dies.
