  • Patent number: 6659172
Abstract: A heat exchanger includes a plurality of spaced-apart plates and a plurality of spacers that separate the plates. The plates and spacers cooperate to form hot-side and cold-side passageways. The plates are made of a thermally and electrically conductive material, and the spacers are made of an electrically non-conductive material. A voltage is applied across the plates to electro-hydrodynamically increase heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger.

Date of Patent: December 9, 2003
    Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.
Inventors: Douglas MacGregor Dewar, Alexander F. Anderson
  • Publication number: 20010047862
Abstract: A heat exchanger includes a plurality of plates, and a plurality of sharp-cornered carbon/carbon fins between the plates.

  • Patent number: 6267175
Abstract: A heat exchanger core includes a stack of fins, plates and closure bars. A first plurality of stiff fibers extend into contacting surfaces of the fins and plates, a second plurality of stiff fibers extend into contacting surfaces of the closure bars and plates, and a third plurality of stiff fibers extend into contacting surfaces of the closure bars and manifolds. The stiff fibers can strengthen the heat exchanger assembly and they can also increase thermal conductivity in their direction of orientation.

  • Patent number: 5845399
Abstract: A composite parallel plate heat exchanger is provided constructed of a plurality of composite plates disposed in a substantial parallel stacked relationship and spaced from each other by composite ribs inserted through and bonded between adjacent plates. The composite plates and ribs are specially constructed to maximize heat transfer between adjacent passageways formed by the plates and the fluids flowing in these passageways.

  • Patent number: 5628363
Abstract: Heat exchangers constructed of a plurality of composite ribbed sheets plates disposed and in a substantial parallel plate stacked relationship are disclosed. The sheets or plates can be spaced from each other by composite ribs or bars formed integral with or bonded to and between adjacent plates. The composite plates function as the fins of a conventional plate fin heat exchanger while the ribs form the passageways to separate adjacent fluids. The fins are specially constructed to maximize heat transfer between adjacent passageways formed by the ribs and the fluids flowing in these passageways.

  • Patent number: 5626188
Abstract: Heat exchangers machined form a thermally oriented block of composite material is provided. First and second arrays of fins can be machined into opposite sides of the block. Composite plates can be disposed over the machined fins to form passageways. The composite plates and fins are specially constructed to maximize heat transfer between adjacent passageways formed by the plates and the fluids flowing in these passageways.
