    Abstract: A release agent applicator applies release agent to an imaging drum and absorbs release agent metered from the drum to extend the operational life of a image drum maintenance unit. The applicator includes a reservoir for storing release agent, the reservoir having a plurality of perforations for enabling release agent to seep from the reservoir, a containment membrane mounted to the reservoir for wicking release agent from the perforations of the reservoir, and a delivery layer mounted to the containment membrane for delivering release agent from the containment membrane to an imaging drum that is in contact with the delivery layer. The delivery layer is matched to the containment membrane to maintain a saturation rate for the delivery layer in a predetermined range and the delivery layer has an uptake rate for release agent contacting an external boundary of the delivery layer that is greater than a release agent supply rate from the containment membrane to the delivery layer.

    Abstract: A method and system for monitoring a print drum maintenance system of an image producing machine is disclosed herein in various embodiments. A test pattern is printed on the print drum, and imaged with an image-on-drum detector to determine a printed pattern response. The print drum is then cleaned again imaged with the image-on-drum detector to determine a cleaned print drum response. A cleaning efficiency is computed by comparing the imaged test pattern response to the imaged cleaned print drum response and determining if a failure condition exists by comparing the computed cleaning efficiency to predetermined limits. A corrective process is performed if the failure condition does exist, the corrective process including changing parameters of the drum maintenance system according to the computed cleaning efficiency. The changed parameters are compared to predetermined thresholds and, if not exceeding the thresholds, the cleaning is repeated after the parameters are changed.

    Abstract: An ink jet printer includes a printer housing, an imaging drum, a drum frame connected to the printer housing and the imaging drum, a print head frame movably mounted in the printer housing, at least two print heads mounted to the print head frame, a first alignment pin connected to the print head frame, and a second alignment pin connected to the print head frame. The imaging drum includes first and second ends. The drum frame includes a first support connected to the first end of the imaging drum and a second support connected to the second end of the imaging drum. The first support includes a first docking station and the second support includes a second docking station. The print head is movable between a printing position and a cleaning position. Each alignment pin connects to the print head frame and extends generally towards the drum frame. The first alignment pin is adapted to be received by the first docking station when the print head frame is moved into the printing position.
