Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition for coating metallic surfaces, comprising a binder component; a corrosion inhibitor polymer based on an ethylenically monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic acid and, if appropriate, further ethylenical monomers, a solvent component, and, if appropriate, crosslinkable components, and also pigment/filler components. The invention further relates to processes for its preparation and also to methods of coating a metallic surface using the composition, to coated metallic surfaces thus obtained, and to the use of the composition as a primer, particularly in coil coating or in atmospheric corrosion control. After drying, the applied layer preferably has a thickness of at least 3.1 ?m and is therefore thicker than a typical pretreatment layer.

Abstract: Provided is a process for esterifying or transesterifying side chains in polymers, which involves esterifying or transesterifying the carboxyl group having the R4 radical of a copolymer obtained by polymerizing a (meth)acrylate of formula (I), and a monomer of formula (II): wherein R1 and R3 are independently H or CH3, R2 and R4 are independently H or an alkyl radical which is optionally substituted by functional groups such as acryloyl, ether, amino, epoxy, halogen or sulfonic acid groups, and n is from 1 to 40, with an alcohol in the presence of an enzyme which catalyzes the esterifying or transesterifying. Further provided is the esterified or transesterified polymer product and its use.

Abstract: Process for applying integrated pretreatment layers to metallic surfaces, particularly the surfaces of coil metals, by treatment with a composition comprising at least one binder, crosslinker, a finely divided inorganic filler, and compounds containing at least two thioamide groups or containing one thioamide group and at least one functional group. Integrated pretreatment layer obtainable by the process.

Abstract: A method for controlling the thickening of aqueous systems comprising silicates, which comprises adding to the aqueous system at least one copolymer of a mean molecular weight Mw of at least 3000 g/mol to at most 60 000 g/mol and the copolymer being made up essentially randomly from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids, monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and other ethylenically unsaturated comonomers, the polymerization for producing the copolymer being performed in the presence of from 0.01 to 100 mol % of at least one base, based on the total amount of all COOH groups of the monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, the quantitative figures in % by weight being respectively based on the total amount of all monomers used.
