  • Publication number: 20170225805
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for controlling a spacecraft for a transfer orbit. The spacecraft includes a momentum subsystem that stores angular momentum relative to a center of mass of the spacecraft, and a propulsion subsystem that includes electric thrusters. A controller identifies a target spin axis for the spacecraft, determines gimbal angles for electric thruster(s) that so that thrust forces from the electric thrusters are parallel to the target spin axis, and initiates a burn of the electric thruster(s) at the gimbal angles. The controller controls the momentum subsystem to compensate for a thruster torque produced by the burn of the electric thrusters. The momentum subsystem is able to produce a target angular momentum about the center of mass, where a coupling between the target angular momentum and an angular velocity of the spacecraft creates an offset torque to counteract the thruster torque.

  • Patent number: 9720250
Abstract: A tunable optical filter utilizes a pair of diffraction gratings and a rotating mirror to achieve a broad filter passband or wavelength bandwidth. By adjusting a small angle between the two diffraction gratings, such as less than approximately 15 degrees, the wavelength bandwidth of the tunable optical filter's passband may be arbitrarily adjusted or set. The two-grating system results in a narrower angular dispersion coefficient than could be achieved through the use of a single grating with similar properties. The narrower angular dispersion in turn results in a broader filter passband or wavelength bandwidth.

  • Publication number: 20160229720
Abstract: Devices, modules, systems, and methods for the desalination of water provided. The devices, modules, systems can include a desalination member separating a concentrated fluid chamber from a dilute fluid chamber. The desalination member can comprise one or more pores extending through the desalination member to fluidly connect concentrated fluid chamber and the dilute fluid chamber, and one or more electrodes configured to generate an electric field gradient in proximity to the opening of the one or more pores in the desalination member. Under an applied bias and in the presence of a pressure driven flow of saltwater into the concentrated fluid chamber, the electric field gradient can preferentially direct ions in saltwater away from the opening of the one or more pores in the desalination member, while desalted water can flow through the pores into dilute fluid chamber.

  • Patent number: 9390748
Abstract: This disclosure describes systems and methods for automatically verifying the processing of items within a materials handling facility. In many instances one or more items are processed in a materials handling facility and an agent processing the item must place the item in a designated container so that the item can be routed to the appropriate destination. By using image capture and analysis, the placement of the item in the appropriate container can be verified without requiring the agent to scan or otherwise identify the container into which the item was placed.

  • Publication number: 20090021357
Abstract: A wireless keyless entry system can lock, unlock automotive doors, trunks, etc. without the use of an ignition key and can disarm an onboard anti-theft alarm system or in the alterative can trigger the alarm as a deterrent. The novelty of this invention relates to the fact that the owner of the vehicle is unaware of an alarm state triggered at the vehicle if the owner is out of eye sight and or ‘ear shot’ of the vehicle. The new wireless and keyless entry system would include an RF transmitter in the vehicle that would transmit a unique code when the vehicle is in an alarm state. The unique signal would be received by a portable receiver/controller carried by the owner/operator of the vehicle, triggering a visible light; an audible alarm, pulsing or steady; and/or a vibrator alerting the owner to investigate the automotive alarm emanating from the vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20080027397
Abstract: A medication dispensing apparatus that provides a mechanical advantage. During dose preparing, a nut rotating element (410) and a screw element (368) are in a first axial arrangement such that a screwing motion of the nut rotating element and screw element relative to the apparatus housing that moves the elements a first axial distance from a home position screws a nut (364) along a drive member threaded shaft (362) a second axial distance different than the first axial distance. During dose dispensing, the nut rotating element and the screw element are in a second axial arrangement, whereby a screwing motion of the screw element relative to the housing back toward the home position advances a plunger (366) in the distal direction to axially advance the nut and thereby the drive number and a fluid container piston to dispense medicine.

  • Publication number: 20070197976
Abstract: A medication dispensing apparatus with a spring-driven locking feature includes a drive member movable in a distal direction within a housing, and a fluid container with a piston that is advanceable by the drive member (60) when such drive member is moved distally by a driving means. The apparatus includes a latching element (180) having a skid (190) that is slidable along a surface of the drive member as the drive member passes distally during advancement. The drive member is arranged with the skid so as to maintain a latching lip of the latching element against a spring force in a first position free of the driving means during dose preparing and injecting prior to a final dose administration.

  • Publication number: 20070191784
Abstract: A medication dispensing apparatus having a gear set (62) to provide a mechanical advantage to the plunging of the apparatus plunger (64). The gear set has a first pinion (114) in meshed engagement with a rack (91) of the plunger, and a second pinion (126) in meshed engagement with a rack (80) of a drive member (68) of the apparatus. The gear set operatively interconnects the plunger and the drive member such that after the plunger is moved relative to the housing (30, 31) in proximal direction to prepare the apparatus for injection, the plunger, when distally moved, causes the drive member to advance in a distal direction to force medication through an outlet, typically provided with an injection needle (40), at the distal end (22) of the apparatus. An opening (130) through one of the pinions accommodates the drive member to allow for a compact apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20050028546
Abstract: Silencing equipment is provided for an air-cooling assembly in a large off-road vehicle having wheels, traction motors for the wheels that operate in a motoring mode to propel the vehicle and a power generating dynamic braking mode, resistor grids for dissipating the dynamic braking power, and a blower for moving cooling air past the grids to cool them. The silencing equipment may include a resistor grid housing 24 and at least one upper inlet 22 for passing cooling air to the interior of the housing. The inlet includes noise-absorbing material. A conduit 28 is provided for directing cooling air from the upper inlet through a transition chamber to reach the blower and at least one resistor grid in the housing. The conduit is lined with noise-absorbing material. A removable cover 30 is provided for the conduit for accessing the air blower in the housing through the transition chamber, whereby servicing of the blower may be performed without removal of the entire upper inlet.

  • Patent number: 6403251
Abstract: A modularized power supply is presented employing individual electrochemical cells which are rendered inert when separated from a specified unlocking circuit. The cells are enclosed in a cell module having a disabling circuit which isolates the cell terminals and prevents release of significant cell energy. A switch in the disabling circuit is activated when the cell module is connected to the specified unlocking circuit in an external frame. The frame includes receptacles for receiving multiple modules, all of which must be connected before power is delivered to a host interface. The frame may include circuits and devices for monitoring the performance of the modules, for controlling cell charging and discharging, and protective elements to protect the modules and tray from aberrant conditions such as high temperatures, overcurrent, and similar events. By including these in the frame, fewer elements are required in the individual modules, reducing their complexity, weight and cost.
