    Abstract: A marine engine has a cylinder block defining at least one cylinder bore and a cylinder liner providing a running surface for a piston in the cylinder bore. The cylinder liner is non-axisymmetric relative to a center axis of the cylinder liner. The cylinder block defines a pocket that retains the cylinder liner and prevents the cylinder liner from rotating about the center axis. Novel cylinder liners, assemblies and methods are provided for forming a marine engine having the cylinder block with the cylinder liner formed therein.

The outer surface and inner surface of the expendable core is coextensive with an inner surface and outer surface of the tool steel portion. A method for high pressure die casting a closed deck engine block using the disclosed slide and expendable cores is also disclosed. The expendable cores are separable from the reliefs in the slide, and form bridges or supports across a water jacket to add stiffness and rigidity to the cast engine cylinders.

    Abstract: A method of making a propeller includes forming the propeller to have blades coupled to an outer hub, the outer hub coupled to an inner hub via ribs, and the inner hub configured to be coupled to the marine vessel. The ribs each have first and second ends with a midpoint therebetween, an inner end and an outer end that define a width therebetween, and a leading surface and a trailing surface that define a thickness therebetween. The ribs are tapered such that the thickness is greater at the midpoint than at least at one of the first end and the second end, and scalloped such that the width is greater at the midpoint than at least at one of the first end and the second end. Each of the ribs is coupled to the outer hub in radial alignment with one of the blades.

The iron constituency may me modified to 0.01% to 0.7% by weight iron, or 0.01% to 0.2% by weight iron. The manganese constituency may be modified to 0.01% to 0.5% by weight manganese. The strontium constituency may be modified to 0.05% to 0.1% by weight strontium. The exhibits an elongation of at least 2%, an average ultimate tensile strength of greater than 250 MPa, and yield strength of greater than 200 MPa. The microstructure has a volume fraction of primary silicon at greater than 10% and a volume fraction of modified aluminum-silicon eutectic at 45% to 90%.

One alloy has 4.5-11.5% by weight silicon; 0.45% by weight maximum iron; 0.20-0.40% by weight manganese; 0.045-0.110% by weight strontium; 0.05-5.0% by weight copper; 0.01-0.70% by weight magnesium; and the balance aluminum. Another alloy has 4.2-5.0% by weight copper; 0.005-0.45% by weight iron; 0.20-0.50% by weight manganese; 0.15-0.35% by weight magnesium; 0.045-0.110% by weight strontium; 0.50% by weight maximum nickel; 0.10% by weight maximum silicon; 0.15-0.30% by weight titanium; 0.05% by weight maximum tin; 0.10% by weight maximum zinc; and the balance aluminum.

    Abstract: A hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloy is disclosed herein containing 18-20% by weight silicon, 0.03-0.20% by weight strontium and the balance aluminum, and alternatively with 3.0-6.0% by weight nickel. The alloy is substantially free of copper and manganese, but for any impurities that may exist. The alloy may also be substantially free of iron, but up to 1.2% by weight iron is permitted in certain embodiments. A more narrow strontium content of 0.05-0.10% by weight, may be used and the alloy may further include 0.3-1.2% by weight magnesium. In some embodiments 0.1-2.0% by weight nickel may be substituted with 0.1-2.0% by weight cobalt. The alloy of the present invention is preferably die cast resulting in castings that have a highly refined primary silicon microstructure with a modified eutectic structure and are highly ductile, but avoid soldering to the die casting dies.
