  • Patent number: 9382294
Abstract: The discovery of a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) gene cluster in the genome of Clostridium thermocellum that produces a secondary metabolite that is assembled outside of the host membrane is described. Also described is the identification of homologous NRPS gene clusters from several additional microorganisms. The secondary metabolites produced by the NRPS gene clusters exhibit broad spectrum antibiotic activity. Thus, antibiotic compounds produced by the NRPS gene clusters, and analogs thereof, their use for inhibiting bacterial growth, and methods of making the antibiotic compounds are described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 28, 2014
Date of Patent: July 5, 2016
Assignee: Los Alamos National Security, LLC

  • Publication number: 20120122079
Abstract: A compound, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, ester, hydrate or solvate thereof, comprising formula IV: A-B wherein A comprises a substrate for an enzyme of a microorganism; B comprises an odorant moiety; B is covalently bonded to an anomeric carbon of A; and A is enzymatically cleavable from B at the covalent bond site between A and B by the enzyme of the microorganism. Examples of such compounds are referred to as substrate-odorant compounds or odorant chimeras. Also disclosed are methods for detecting a microorganism that include contacting the compound with a sample that may include the microorganism.
