  • Publication number: 20090006523
Abstract: A system for providing XML-based asynchronous and interactive feeds for Web applications that provides a highly efficient and extensible XML Javascript framework allowing easy insertion of a comment/news feed control into any Web page. The framework allows for reading of any XML format and provides a new and easy way for modifying the look-and-feel of the control via HTML templates with familiar XPath bindings. The rendering performed through the system supports both flat and indented (“threaded”) views for a comment thread. The system improves the parsing speed of incoming XML, and supports a flexible event model for others to develop plug-ins and mashups in the spirit of Web 2.0.

  • Publication number: 20080313206
Abstract: A system that automatically obtains Web page-specific scripts to save and restore the state of a Web page. When a user bookmarks or copies a Web page URL to the clipboard, a function is called to create a page state file that is stored together with the current URL to create a bookmark. When the bookmark is loaded or pasted into the location bar of the Web browser, the system reads the URL and page state file, and loads but does not yet display the Web page indicated by the URL of the bookmark. The system then locates the Restore Page State function in the loaded Web page's script, and executes the Restore Page State function on the page state file, resulting in modification to the DOM (Document Object Model) representation of the Web page and display of the Web page to the user based on the modified DOM.

  • Publication number: 20080162482
Abstract: A method of managing online communities within an online community management system can include declaratively specifying a taxonomy of online community types, declaratively specifying a plurality of roles for members of online communities, and declaratively specifying a security policy that associates permissions with roles and online community types. A plurality of online community profiles can be maintained. Each online community profile can represent an online community, specify an online community type from the taxonomy, and specify a list of members of that online community as well as an associated role for each member. Access can be provided to a selected online community according to the online community type of the selected online community, a role within the selected online community that is associated with a user attempting to access the selected online community, and the security policy.

  • Publication number: 20080154949
Abstract: A system for social bookmarking of a resource provided through a Web application that doesn't follow the representational state transfer architectural style (REST). When processing a request for a social bookmarking operation, the system searches for a URL and potentially other resource information within the document object model of a currently loaded Web page. If such resource information is found, then it is used to process the requested social bookmarking operation. Otherwise, if such resource information is not found in the document object model, then the system uses the URL stored in the location bar of the Web browser to process the requested social bookmarking operation. The system includes semantic information in the DOM of a Web page that is used to identify subsets of content within the Web page that can be socially bookmarked. The semantic information of the disclosed system is stored in what are generally referred to as “microformatting”.

  • Publication number: 20080082607
Abstract: A system for discussion thread management using tag-based categorization, in which three types of tags are provided together to enable effective categorization of discussion threads, based on both automated and manual tagging. The three tag types are 1) user-defined tags, 2) moderator-promoted tags, and 3) system-generated tags. User-defined tags are arbitrarily defined by individual users and associated by users with posts to meet specific user needs. System-generated tags are automatically generated for each sub-thread to summarize a post and all the replies beneath it. System-generated tags can be promoted to a moderator-promoted tags when a moderator user verifies the correctness of a system-generated tag. The disclosed system detects topic changes in discussion threads based on the tags associated with each post in the thread. A moderator can manually examine sub-threads that have been determined to be off topic, and take appropriate actions.

  • Publication number: 20080005234
Abstract: A method of providing contextual information in a discussion forum can include presenting a flat view of a plurality of posts of a discussion thread and providing a control proximate to at least one of the plurality of posts, wherein each control is associated with the post proximate to that control. Responsive to activation of a control associated with a selected post, presenting hierarchy information relating to the discussion thread concurrently with the flat view. A context for the flat view can be maintained.

  • Publication number: 20070300159
Abstract: A method of quoting content from a post in a discussion forum can include selecting content within a source post of the discussion forum and performing a drag operation. A representation of the selected content can be dragged in coordination with motion of an onscreen pointer. The method further can include inserting the selected content within an open reply form in the discussion forum upon termination of the drag operation.
