  • Patent number: 11254344
Abstract: A method for introducing electric conductors into an overmolding of a steering wheel frame is provided. The electric conductors are used for heating and shielding purposes and for sensing contact on a steering wheel. In a first step, at least one cut is introduced into the overmolding using a cutting tool. In a second step, both a first layer of an electric conductor and a second layer of an electric conductor are simultaneously introduced into the cut that has been created. The first layer forms both a heating layer for heating the steering wheel and a guard layer which, together with the second layer acting as a sensor layer, allows the capacitive sensing of hand contact.

  • Patent number: 11192570
Abstract: An apparatus for heating a steering wheel and for detecting a steering wheel contact comprises a steering wheel armature (10) made from electrically conductive material and an electric heating conductor (12) arranged outside of the steering wheel armature (10). The apparatus further comprises a control and evaluation device (18) connected to the steering wheel armature (10) and the electric heating conductor (10) by means of which control and evaluation device the electric heating conductor (12) is repeatedly operated temporarily during a heating operation as a heating element for heating the steering wheel and temporarily during a measuring operation as a sensor element for detecting a steering wheel contact. The control and evaluation device (18) is configured so as to maintain the steering wheel armature (10) on a predetermined and especially constant potential at least during each measuring operation.

  • Patent number: 10556612
Abstract: A method of introducing an electric conductor (22), especially a heating wire, into foam padding (20) of a steering wheel skeleton (18) includes introducing at least one cut (26) into the foam padding (20) by means of a cutting tool (34). At the same time the conductor is introduced into the produced cut (26). Moreover a tool as well as a tool assembly for implementing the method and a vehicle steering wheel are provided.

  • Publication number: 20200017136
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for introducing electric conductors (22) into an overmolding (20) of a steering wheel frame (18). The electric conductors (22) are used in particular for heating and shielding purposes and for sensing contact on a steering wheel. Said method comprises the following steps: in a first method step, introducing at least one cut (26) into the overmolding (20) using a cutting tool (34); and, in a second method step, simultaneously introducing both a first layer (22a) of an electric conductor (22) and a second layer (22b) of an electric conductor (22) into the cut (26) that has been created. The first layer (22a) preferably forms both a heating layer for heating the steering wheel and a guard layer which, together with the second layer (22b) acting as a sensor layer, allows the capacitive sensing of hand contact.

  • Patent number: 10501107
Abstract: A device for detecting steering wheel contact comprises at least a first electrode (12) which is provided in a steering wheel (10) and which forms, together with a human body acting as a second electrode and a dielectric situated therebetween, at least one sensor capacitor (26). The device also comprises an evaluation circuit (24) having a reference capacitor (30) of known capacitance which can be connected parallel to the sensor capacitor (26), a direct current voltage source (34) which can be connected to the reference capacitor (30), and a measuring device for measuring the voltage at the reference capacitor (30).
