  • Patent number: 7428632
Abstract: A branch prediction mechanism includes a branch prediction memory and an extended pattern cache. The extended pattern cache detects predetermined repeating patterns of branch outcomes and stores a plurality of compressed representations of these such that when they recur their termination can be predicted. This enables program loops which are longer in length than can be represented within a reasonably sized branch prediction memory to nevertheless be detected and have their loop ends predicted.

  • Publication number: 20060095747
Abstract: A data processing system 2 incorporating an instruction pipeline 14 and a prefetch unit 16 is provided with a branch prediction mechanism using both a branch prediction memory 20 storing 1-bit values indicating strongly taken or strongly not taken together with a branch prediction cache indicating for certain selected branch history values either weakly taken or weakly not taken predictions. When a conditional branch instruction is encountered, then the preceding branch prediction history is used to access a first prediction within the branch prediction memory 20 and is looked up to check for a hit within the branch prediction cache 22. If a hit occurs, then a second prediction within the branch prediction cache 22 is used in preference to the first prediction, otherwise the first prediction is used.

  • Publication number: 20060095749
Abstract: A branch prediction mechanism includes a branch prediction memory 18 and an extended pattern cache 24. The extended pattern cache 24 detects predetermined repeating patterns of branch outcomes and stores a plurality of compressed representations of these such that when they recur their termination can be predicted. This enables program loops which are longer in length than can be represented within a reasonably sized branch prediction memory 18 to nevertheless be detected and have their loop ends predicted.

  • Publication number: 20050198474
Abstract: The present invention provides techniques for bit field manipulation, and in particular techniques for bit field extraction and bit field insertion. Data processing apparatus, methods and computer program products are provided. One data processing apparatus comprises data processing logic operable to perform data processing operations on at least one data value; and instruction decode logic operable in response to a bit field extract instruction, which enables a predetermined sequence of bits from the at least one data value to be provided as a sign-extended or zero-extended bit field extracted data value, to control the data processing logic.
