  • Patent number: 9203400
Abstract: Methods, systems, circuits, and devices for power-packet-switching power converters using bidirectional bipolar transistors (BTRANs) for switching. Four-terminal three-layer BTRANs provide substantially identical operation in either direction with forward voltages of less than a diode drop. BTRANs are fully symmetric merged double-base bidirectional bipolar opposite-faced devices which operate under conditions of high non-equilibrium carrier concentration, and which can have surprising synergies when used as bidirectional switches for power-packet-switching power converters. BTRANs are driven into a state of high carrier concentration, making the on-state voltage drop very low.

  • Patent number: 9202478
Abstract: A head and a method to manufacture a head are disclosed. A slider is provided and has a mounting face that is opposite but substantially parallel to its air bearing surface. According to an example embodiment, a first plurality of layers may be deposited on the mounting face, including a tin layer, a first underlayer that comprises platinum, and an interface layer disposed between the first underlayer and the tin layer. The interface layer may comprise Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, or W. A submount with an attached laser diode may include a gold layer and be positioned adjacent to the first plurality of layers. The tin layer may then be melted so that the gold layer is dissolved therein, upon solidification attaching the submount to the mounting face by a solder layer that preferably comprises at least 45% gold by weight dissolved in tin.

  • Publication number: 20150337442
Abstract: A solution for manufacturing semiconductors is provided. An embodiment provides a chemical vapor deposition reactor, which includes a chemical vapor deposition chamber. A substrate holder located in the chemical vapor deposition chamber can be rotated about its own axis at a first angular speed, and a gas injection component located in the chemical vapor deposition chamber can be rotated about an axis of the gas injection component at a second angular speed. The angular speeds are independently selectable and can be configured to cause each point on a surface of a substrate wafer to travel in an epicyclical trajectory within a gas flow injected by the gas injection component. An angle between the substrate holder axis and the gas injection component axis and/or a distance between the substrate holder axis and the gas injection component axis can be controlled variables.

  • Publication number: 20150339420
Abstract: A method for designing a dual-mode logic circuit which is selectably operational in static and dynamic modes is performed as follows. A basis library with a DML inverter and dual-mode logic (DML) bicells is provided. Each DML bicell includes a type-A DML logic gate with a clock input and a type-B DML logic gate with an inverted clock input. A pseudo-static library is formed from the basis library by modifying each bicell of the basis library and specifying at least one dynamic timing parameter. A dynamic library is formed from the basis library by specifying dynamic timing parameters for the basis library DML inverter and bicells. Logic behavior of the required logic circuit is defined. An initial logic circuit design synthesized from the pseudo-static library and the defined logic behavior. Finally, a dynamic circuit design is formed by replacing modified bicells with corresponding bicells from the dynamic library.

  • Publication number: 20150339473
Abstract: An electronic device includes multiple applications that can access a smart card or other security apparatus. A first application that is to use the security apparatus prompts a user for a security string such as a PIN or password. Upon receipt of the PIN or password, the first application unlocks the security apparatus for use. Additionally, the first application receives a token from a security service that interfaces with the security apparatus. The token can be shared by the first application with other applications. For example, the first application can share the token with other trusted applications. The other applications that receive the token can refrain from issuing a prompt for a security string and receiving a response from the user. The token can be used instead of the security string to obtain access to the security apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20150339977
Abstract: A method and system for programming, calibrating and driving a light emitting device display, and for operating a display at a constant luminance even as some of the pixels in the display are degraded over time. The system may include extracting a time dependent parameter of a pixel for calibration. Each pixel in the display is configured to emit light when a voltage is supplied to the pixel's driving circuit, which causes a current to flow through a light emitting element. Degraded pixels are compensated by supplying their respective driving circuits with greater voltages. The display data is scaled by a compression factor less than one to reserve some voltage levels for compensating degraded pixels. As pixels become more degraded, and require additional compensation, the compression factor is decreased to reserve additional voltage levels for use in compensation.

  • Publication number: 20150338011
Abstract: Disclosed is an absorber system for absorbing pressure shocks and fluid volume shocks in a fluid system. In particular, the absorber system includes a housing with a joint for insertion within a fluid system, wherein the housing interior is in fluid communication with fluid in the fluid system. As such, when a pressure and/or fluid volume shock is developed within the fluid system, fluid is forced into the housing via the joint. A membrane is disposed within the housing in such a way that the fluid impacts the membrane which, in response, flexes to absorb and control the pressure and/or fluid volume shock within the fluid system. The absorber system, thus, controls pressure and/or fluid volume shock within a system and can prevent water hammer and other problems which can result from the development of pressure and/or fluid volume shock.

  • Publication number: 20150335128
Abstract: The invention relates to hair dryers. Various techniques for improving air flow in hair dryers are described, including a hair dryer providing laminar flow air. In another variant a hair dryer has a two air flow channels: one a hot air channel the other a cool air channel, with the cool air channel circumscribing the hot air channel. The nozzle end of the hair dryer is arranged such that the cool air channel extends forward of the hot air channel outlet. This allows a hair dryer to be placed close to, or on, a person's hair/head without and risk of burning the person's head. A hair dryer with external power supply is also described which reduces the weight of the housing held by a user.
