Publication number: 20230364655Abstract: Systems and methods for self-cleaning a surface of an object where an electrodynamic shield is mounted to a surface of the object. The electrodynamic shield includes one or more sets of electrodes atop a substrate, at least one or more sets of electrodes being covered in a protective film. A coating is applied to the top surface of the protection film. A signal pulse generator is connected to the one or more sets of electrodes. The signal pulse generator generates a pulse signal that causes the one or more sets of electrodes to generate an electric field. The pulse signal comprises a plurality of different pulse signals which have phase differences between consecutive signals, and the electric field causes a particle atop the coating to experience an electrostatic force and be repelled away from the coating. These pulse signals (including shapes, amplitudes, shifts, and frequencies) can be tuned to increase efficiency of removal depending on dust type and relative humidity.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 28, 2023Publication date: November 16, 2023Applicant: The Research Foundation for the State of New YorkInventors: Alexander Orlov, Shrish Patel, James F. Patent number: 10647783Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods for functionalizing the surfaces of cellulose nanoparticles. In embodiments, nanoparticles are aerosolized, and then passed through a flow reactor where they are contacted with gaseous reactants to functionalize the surface of the nanoparticles. In other embodiments, the nanoparticles are aerosolized, and then passed through a plasma reactor where they are contacted with gaseous reactants to functionalize the surface of the nanoparticles. Once the functionalized nanoparticles are produced, they may be combined with polymers to form polymer composites having both a polymer and the functionalized nanoparticles. Systems for producing these functionalized nanoparticles, coupled with downstream polymer processing equipment for forming the polymer composites, are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2016Date of Patent: May 12, 2020Assignee: The Research Foundation for the State University of New YorkInventors: Alexander Orlov, Daniel Knopf, Robert Grubbs, Girish Ramakrishnan

Patent number: 8556545Abstract: A cutting tool has a tool body provided with at least one insert pocket in which a cutting insert is retained. A device for adjusting a position of the cutting insert within the insert pocket is also provided. A cavity adjacent the insert pocket accommodates an adjustment wedge having a forward surface in sliding contact with a minor side surface of the cutting insert and an adjustment screw threadingly engaged with a female threaded section of the adjustment wedge. The adjustment screw is constrained to remain in its position in the cavity, although rotation of the adjustment screw about its axis results in a sliding motion of the adjustment wedge relative to the cavity and a sliding motion of the forward surface relative to the minor side surface, which translates to displacement of the cutting insert in a direction parallel to a base surface of the insert pocket.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2010Date of Patent: October 15, 2013Assignee: Iscar, Ltd.Inventors: Danny Chen, Alexander Orlov

Patent number: 8356960Abstract: A cutting tool includes at least one cutting portion, having an insert pocket, releasably retaining a single-sided cutting insert therein. The cutting portion has a tangential screwing element to clamp the cutting insert in the insert pocket. The screwing element, which comprises a screw, allows releasing and clamping of the cutting insert without having to completely remove the screwing element from the insert pocket. The cutting insert has a top surface, a bottom surface and a peripheral side surface; a recess is formed in the bottom surface. The screwing element is inserted into the recess via the bottom surface. Upon fastening of the screw, a protruding portion of the screwing element clamps the cutting insert in its insert pocket. The cutting insert and protruding portion may have respective geometries allowing them to abut one another at at least two distinct abutment sub-regions.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2009Date of Patent: January 22, 2013Assignee: Iscar, Ltd.Inventors: Alexander Orlov, Danny Chen
