Patent number: 7189032Abstract: A method of producing a tool insert is disclosed. A body (50) of a superabrasive material having major surfaces on each of opposite sides thereof is provided. It is typically an abrasive compact disc such as a PCBN or a PCD disc, for example. An array of spaced cores (58) filled with hard metal, such as cemented carbide, for example, extends from one major surface to the opposite major surface. The body is severed from one major surface to the opposite major surface along intersecting, transverse lines (68) around the respective hard metal cores to produce the tool insert. The body may include an interlayer (56) of hard metal intermediate the opposite major surfaces, preferably the same hard metal as the cores, such that the cores are integrally formed with the interlayer.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2003Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Inventors: Iain Patrick Goudemond, Nedret Can, James Alexander Reid, Mehmet Serdar Ozbayraktar, Matthew William Cook, Stig Ake Andersin, Bo Christer Olofsson, Leif Anders Sandstrom, Stefan Magnus Olof Persson

Patent number: 6567087Abstract: A new method of creating a realistic simulated terrain database results in a database that requires less computer memory for storage than prior simulated terrain databases. The new method generates a simulated surface that provides realistic disturbances to a real-time mathematical model of a vehicle traversing the simulated surface. The simulated surface is also output visually. The method uses fractal Brownian motion to create the high-resolution terrain database in the frequency domain, and then the database is transformed to the spatial domain using a two-dimensional inverse Fast Fourier Transform. Then control points describing a NURBS surface are extracted from the transformed database, and thereafter geometric G1 continuity is created between surface patches represented by the NURBS control points. The surface patches form a high-resolution surface superimposed on a lower resolution surface produced by the image generator to create a hybrid, high-resolution simulated terrain.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2000Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Alexander A. Patent number: 5778746Abstract: A tandem tool point apparatus for simultaneously machining surfaces on opposite sides of a thin wall may be used on an annulus having flat machining surfaces or on a circular wall having curved machining surfaces. The tool has spaced apart first and second tool points mounted in first and second tool holders respectively and a coupling element for coupling the first and second tool holders together to maintain the first and second tool points in tandem during a machining operation on the opposite sides of the wall. The apparatus preferably includes a tandem adjusting element for simultaneously adjusting the space between the tool points. A spacer may be used between the holders extending longitudinally over a portion of a length of the holders and the adjusting element longitudinally disposed between the tool points.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1996Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Jeffrey S. Patent number: 5603460Abstract: A cone on which thread is wound has a central frangible section at which it may easily be broken. The thread forms a winding on the cone at each side of the section leaving a space where it crosses the section. The cone may be snapped in half to give two independent wound cone parts, each with approximately half the amount of thread. This allows the purchaser the flexibility to use the cone in various ways. In one embodiment, the cone parts may be urged axially together after the frangible section has been broken, to become removably attached to one another with a reduced space between the respective windings.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 1995Date of Patent: February 18, 1997Assignee: Donisthorpe & Company LimitedInventor: Alexander Reid
