Publication number: 20240119326Abstract: Systems and methods for measuring quantum states of qubits with more than two levels are provided. A method can include, for a plurality of shuffling sequences, applying, by a quantum computer, one or more quantum gates to the one or more qubits to execute a quantum algorithm; applying, by the quantum computer, a shuffling sequence to the one or more qubits; and measuring, using a readout apparatus, the state of the one or more qubits to determine a readout state. The method can further include determining, by a classical computer or the quantum computer, an average occupation for one or more of the quantum states of the one or more qubits using the readout states for each of the shuffling sequences. The readout states can correspond to a state in a subset of the quantum states of the one or more qubits.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2023Publication date: April 11, 2024Inventors: Kevin Joseph Satzinger, Julian Shaw Kelly, Paul Victor Klimov, Alexander Nikolaevich Korotkov

Publication number: 20230390670Abstract: The present invention is concerned with degassing processes, and more specifically with a degassing apparatus and method for removing hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen polysulfides from liquid sulfur in a rapid and efficient manner to result in low residual hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen polysulfide levels. Utilizing a rotodynamic degassing pumping unit, a first fluid, typically in the liquid phase, is pumped or drawn under pressure or vacuum, while a second fluid, typically in a gaseous phase, is pumped or drawn under pressure or vacuum into the first fluid, effecting a chemical reaction. A rotary impeller having a plurality of blades is presented at a submerged location in the liquid sulfur surrounded by a draft-tube. The rotor (impeller) is divided into three distinct blade sections: a) a radial flow section; b) a mixed flow section; and c) an axial flow section. An overflow weir controls the depth of the liquid inside the degasser's housing.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 12, 2021Publication date: December 7, 2023Inventors: Damien Patrick McFadyen, Ioana Todea, Paul Roy Larson, David Alexander Shaw

Publication number: 20230096427Abstract: Routines and methods disclosed herein can increase a power efficiency of a prosthetic hand without drastically reducing the speed at which it operates. A prosthesis can implement an acceleration profile, which can reduce an energy consumption of a motor, or an amount of electrical and/or mechanical noise produced by a motor, as the motor as the motor transitions from an idle state to a non-idle state. A prosthesis can implement a deceleration profile, which can reduce the energy consumption of the motor, or an amount of electrical and/or mechanical noise produced by a motor, as the motor transitions from a non-idle state to an idle state.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 2, 2022Publication date: March 30, 2023Inventors: Steven Byrne, Neil Alexander Shaw

Publication number: 20220032973Abstract: A method and mechanism for initiating an emergency stop for an unattended railcar is disclosed. The method may include using a trip arm placed alongside the railway tracks at a designated stop point that may contact a portable trip-cock lever arm that extends out beyond the perimeter of the railcar if the railcar reaches the stop point as it moves along the track. The trip-cock lever arm may be attached to a valve that is connected to the pneumatic brake system of the unattended railcar. As the trip-cock lever arm rotates, the valve may open to release the air pressure in the pneumatic brake system causing the brakes to engage the wheels causing the railcar to stop.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 18, 2021Publication date: February 3, 2022Applicant: Enersul Inc.Inventors: Mark Charles Engelland, Trevor Michael Greer, David Alexander Shaw

Patent number: 4120291Abstract: An ultrasonic scanning device having an ultrasonic transmission/reception probe arranged for rapid scanning in a plane while a housing of the device is being held stationary so that real time ultrasonic "pictures" of moving organs such as the heart, can be obtained. The probe is arranged to scan through a window of the housing and mounting means for the probe ensure that ultrasonic signals from the probe have a constant reference point of departure which is at a well-defined small distance from the window. Ultrasonic coupling means are provided between the probe and window, and the window, coupling means and probe may form a sub-assembly removable from the housing.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1976Date of Patent: October 17, 1978Assignee: Greater Glasgow Health BoardInventors: John Stewart Paton, Alexander Shaw
