  • Publication number: 20240064887
Abstract: Employing undulator devices as x-ray radiation sources requires expensive and bulky support systems for operation, which are not robust and lead to limited ranges of generated radiation energies. A force-compensated undulator device is described. The device includes an undulator having first and second magnet arrays disposed along a central axis. The first magnet array is translatable along the central axis. The device further includes a compensator unit disposed adjacent to the first magnet array with the compensator unit having a first row of magnets disposed along a compensator axis with the compensator axis being parallel to the central axis, and a second row of magnets disposed along the compensator axis. The first row of magnets is translatable along the compensator axis. The compensator provides magnetic forces that neutralize the system dynamic magnetic forces generated by the undulator.

  • Patent number: 10356889
Abstract: A technique for controlling and compensating the energy spread of a charged particle beam is provided. This technique is based on a passive dielectric-loaded structure that redistributes the energy within the bunch by means of the wakefield generated in the structure. Cylindrical and planar structure configurations are provided and also means for electrical and mechanical tuning to optimize performance. The instant abstract is neither intended to define the invention disclosed in this specification nor intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way.

  • Patent number: 9786464
Abstract: A method and system for beam deflection. The method and system for beam deflection comprises a compact superconducting RF cavity further comprising a waveguide comprising an open ended resonator volume configured to operate as a trapped dipole mode; a plurality of cells configured to provide a high operating gradient; at least two pairs of protrusions configured for lowering surface electric and magnetic fields; and a main power coupler positioned to optimize necessary coupling for an operating mode and damping lower dipole modes simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 9590383
Abstract: A technique for producing a coherent beam of hard X-rays is provided. This technique is based on a short wavelength undulator that uses the fields of an electromagnetic wave to deflect a relativistic electron beam along a sinusoidal trajectory in order to cause it to emit X-rays. The undulator consists of a slow-wave structure that is energized by a second counterpropagating electron beam. Cylindrical and planar structure configurations are provided and also a mechanism for electrical and mechanical tuning to allow control over the wavelength of the emitted X-ray beam.

  • Patent number: 6285690
Abstract: An ignition feedback regenerative amplifier consists of an injector, a linear accelerator with energy recovery, and a high-gain free electron laser amplifier. A fraction of the free electron laser output is coupled to the input to operate the free electron laser in the regenerative mode. A mode filter in this loop prevents run away instability. Another fraction of the output, after suitable frequency up conversion, is used to drive the photocathode. An external laser is provided to start up both the amplifier and the injector, thus igniting the system.
