    Abstract: A road roller comprises a ballast means made in the form of a chamber of gasproof material, said chamber having one side open and being provided with an end wall connected to a chassis of the road roller. The chamber communicates with a source of vacuum and is arranged so that, when vacuum is induced in the chamber, the pavement being compacted overlaps said open side of the chamber with the result that forces are transmitted from the chamber to the chassis of the road roller.
