    Abstract: A time delay latch device of the arming assembly of a delay fuze which replaces the current system in support of the U.S. Navy Mine Clearing Program. The time delay mechanism is a mechanical run-away escapement having a one-half pound release force that unlatches an 800-pound load. The mechanical force reduction mechanism that makes up the latch device consists of 10 components rather than the existing 31 and a pyrotechnic time delay mechanism consisting of two components in lieu of the existing 14. Hence, the latch device taught herein provides not only the requisite delay and required latch release force but also reduces the total number of components from 44 to 12; thus creating significant cost savings in manufacturing. Time delay latch mechanism is located within the ram shaft that holds the ram shaft spring captive between the ram shafts and housing. The latching mechanism for the ram shaft comprises two ball detents located within the ram shaft and held in place by the housing.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a new and unique structure in a collapsible decelerator for aerial bodies launched from a high velocity vehicle and designed to provide a high drag stabilizer capable of withstanding release in air stream velocities from subsonic to supersonic. The decelerator preferably includes a hollow inflatable star, the outermost points of which have hooded valve openings through which regulated airflow enters and inflates the star to decelerate the body to which it is attached. The new and unique capability comprises an angular offset of each air scoop to create desired rotational speed in the selected direction.The amount of angular offset and protrusion into the air stream controls the magnitude of spin rate, the direction of angular offset controls the direction of spin.

The decelerator preferably includes a hollow inflatable star, the outermost points of which have hooded valve openings through which regulated airflow enters and inflates the star to decelerate the munition to which it is attached. The improvement comprises an offset mounting piece to create a side force on the decelerator, expanding the coverage pattern of deployed bodies. The amount of offset controls the magnitude of the side or lateral force on the device during descent.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a speed retarding mechanism for aerial bs launched from a high velocity vehicle and designed to provide a high drag stabilizer capable to withstand release in air stream velocities moving at 2600 feet per second. The mechanism includes a balloon consisting of a top and bottom panel joined on the perimeters and having valve openings through its bottom panel. When the load has been braked to an acceptable velocity the valve closes the openings causing the balloon to collapse and become a streamer providing a high energy impact.

    Abstract: A fuzing device for a submunition or munition comprises an airtight housing ontaining a pressure chamber communicating through an orifice to a diaphragm with a firing pin attached thereto. The fuze is actuated by pressurizing the chamber with gas which flows through the orifice at a predetermined rate until the total pressure on the diaphragm causes it to deform sufficiently to activate a detonator.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a fluid controlled timer comprising a cydrical housing, and a close-fitting rotary shaft positioned co-axially within the housing. A spiral passageway scribed between the housing and the rotary shaft extends between the ends of the housing. The spiral passageway contains a viscous liquid and a sphere slidably disposed therein and capable of traversing the entire passageway length. An external constant torque spring connected to one end of the rotary shaft causes the rotary shaft movement while resistance to such movement results from interference of the sphere during its traverse through the spiral passageway, thus providing an extended time delay.

    Abstract: A dispenser-launched, spin-armed munition is provided with spin-imparting ans made up of a set of helically-oriented primary vanes, having an outer envelope substantially equal to that of the munition body, attached to the body, and a set of helically-oriented, resilient, flexible, extension vanes attached to the primary vanes and extending outwardly therebeyond to increase the effective vane area. The flexible vanes are folded inwardly when the munition is inserted into its launch tube and spring outwardly after launch. The flexible vanes are removably attached to the rigid vanes by rivets in such manner that the flexible vanes are separated from the rigid vanes by the airstream at a predetermined spin rate.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to an apparatus intended to allow detonon of munitions by the occurrence of a triggering event at a location remote from the actual munition. This apparatus contains a piezoelectric crystal which is deformed by the firing of a conventional blasting cap upon the happening of a triggering event. Deformation of the piezoelectric crystal generates an electric impulse sufficient to initiate an electric blasting cap thereby detonating the munition.

    Abstract: A coupling device for use with a primer and blasting cap in demolition fig devices and the like. The device includes a body portion defining a straight line path from the primer to the blasting cap. Also included is a moveable slide positioned in the body to block the straight line path and moveable to clear that path. A spring is used to act on the slide to clear the path, and a safety pin holds the slide against the spring until firing is desired. A time delay device such as a liquid annular orifice dashpot delays movement of the slide. A preferred embodiment uses two slides and two springs to first clear the path and second place a blasting cap lead in alignment on the path when the slides clear the path.
