Abstract: To withdraw pleural effusions from between the visceral and parietal pleurae, which accumulate due to metastatic carcinoma of the breast, a catheter is inserted into the fluid accumulation which is withdrawn through the catheter by a suction device. The catheter has a weighted end which can be magnetically manipulated. The catheter is provided with specially shaped and located openings to take into account the fluid's high content of insoluble, coagulable strands of fibrin.
