  • Patent number: 5650952
Abstract: In processors, notably digital signal processors, it is often necessary to form the sum of products of a concatenation of data word pairs, for example for correlation or convolution operations, in which the one data word of each pair can assume only one of the two values +1 or -1. In accordance with the invention, in that case instead of forming a product in a multiplier, the one data word of each pair is applied to an add/subtract device in order to control the function thereof in respect of addition or subtraction; one input of the add/subtract unit then receives the other data words of the data word pairs, and the other input is connected to the output of the accumulator register. Thus, a complex multiplier device is saved or, should such a device be present anyway, it will not be used so that the power loss of the processor is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5434889
Abstract: In a base band conversion receiver, frequency deviation in the base band signal due to tolerances and drift of the transmitter frequency and of the mixing frequencies in the receiver is compensated by an automatic control. The signal converted to the base band is applied to a channel estimator which forms a channel estimation vector as an estimate of the instantaneous channel impulse responses in a complex bag band representation. A frequency deviation estimator evaluates the changes in time these channel estimation vectors.

  • Patent number: 5375255
Abstract: A radio receiver for an RF signal which is phase or frequency modulated by an information signal. The receiver has an analog receiving section which provides non-linear dynamic compression. The resulting analog signal is sampled and the samples are digitized by an A/D converter. The non-linear dynamic compression reduces the necessary number of quantizing steps in the A/D converter, which is less expensive, but thereby introduces non-linear distortion. To compensate such distortion, in the digital processing section of the receiver an expansion section is provided which processes the digital signal samples in accordance with the inverse of the non-linear dynamic compression characteristic. The resulting expanded digital sample values equalize the analog non-linear dynamic compression. The information signal is recovered from the expanded digital signals.

  • Patent number: 5307374
Abstract: A receiver for digital information transmitted over a dispersive channel. Where the channel has a storage depth of n bits, memory requirements for an adaptive equalizer are reduced by storing transition states for only 2.sup.n' states, where n'<n, and storing at least n previous bits for 2.sup.n' states in a memory path register. At the same time the equalizer may be based on a reduced state model with 2.sup.n' states. Only n' bits are determined directly by state transitions; the remaining n-n' bits appear from each memory path leading to the respective state, stored in the memory path register.

  • Patent number: 5251237
Abstract: A digital data receiver is enabled to operate with good error correction of signals subject to high multi-path distortion, and to operate with lower power consumption as the incoming signal dispersion becomes less. A signal analyzer measures the quality of the received signal. The amount of error correction is then adjusted in accordance with the quality factor. An equalizer may be used having an adjustable number of filter stages, or a state model of the transmission channel may be used with controllable numbers of states, channel coefficients, data paths, or register lengths for storing path data.

  • Patent number: 5185764
Abstract: A receiver for time-varying distorted data signals, includes an equalizer and a channel estimator which generates a channel information signal with the aid of a training signal sent together with the data signal and with the aid of an image of the training signal stored in the receiver, and applies this signal to the equalizer. The receiver further includes an arrangement for channel tracking which generates correction values for the channel information signal with the aid of data detected by the equalizer. At very high relative velocities between the sender and the receiver (e.g. 200 km/h when using the mobile radio set in a motor vehicle, for example) a degradation of the bit error rate is avoided in that, at least part of or the complete received training signal is applied to the arrangement for channel tracking prior to the data signals to be equalized and detected after the channel information determined on the basis of the training signal has been transmitted.

  • Patent number: 5014283
Abstract: A preprocessing unit is inserted between a baseband converter and an equalizer/detector for performing a signal processing which corresponds to a phase rotation of the CPM-signal in the baseband represented by in phase and quadrature components. The phase rotation progresses in discrete steps of 90.degree. per bit interval of the binary data signal contained in the CPM-signal. The introduction of the preprocessing unit renders it possible to use a comparatively simple conventional equalizer/detector for binary pulse amplitude modulated signals (PAM-signals) for equalizing and detecting binary CPM-signals received in distorted form. When the equalizer/detector is adaptive, a further preprocessing unit is inserted between a channel estimator and adjusting inputs of the equalizer/detector.
