Patent number: 4500295Abstract: A simulated radiation source and a compatible detector system are disclos The combination is useful in training for detecting alpha radiation contamination. A flexible, soft iron plate or first permanent magnet in the detector system responds to a second magnet that is employed to represent an alpha radiation source. Where the first permanent magnet is used, an iron member may be adopted in lieu of the second magnet. The simulated source is affixed to the subject's clothing or body. When the detector system is brought into proximity with the simulated radiation source, the soft plate or first magnet responds and affects a strain gage which in turn provides an electronic indication.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1983Date of Patent: February 19, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Richard H. Insinger, III, Alfred H. Rodemann

Patent number: 4348185Abstract: A wide angle infinity display system to be utilized by a trainee pilot for bserving a visual scene displayed upon a retroreflective screen. The system includes a helmet adapted to be worn by the trainee pilot, image producing means for generating visual information, image forming means mounted upon the helmet for projecting the visual information onto the retroreflective screen so as to form the visual scene observed by the trainee pilot, and communicating means for transmitting the visual information from the image producing means to the image forming means. Position monitoring means coupled to the helmet sense angular movement of the head of the trainee pilot, and the visual scene is changed correspondingly, to permit scanning of a wide angle field of view.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1980Date of Patent: September 7, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Denis R. Breglia, Alfred H. Rodemann

Patent number: 4336976Abstract: A method and apparatus for the holographic storage of terrain data on a hgraphic recording material. The holographic storage apparatus includes a camera, positioned above a terrain surface, for recording on a photographic film a plurality of photographic images of a matrix of perspective points of a terrain surface. A laser gives rise to an object laser light beam which is directed onto, and is reflected from, the photographic film; and, a reference laser light beam which is directed onto the holographic recording material. An object transform lens directs the reflected object laser light beam onto the holographic recording material to form, when combined with the reference laser light beam, a plurality of holograms, with each of the holograms based on a photograph taken from one of the matrix of perspective points above the terrain surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1979Date of Patent: June 29, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Alfred H. Rodemann, Denis R. Breglia

Patent number: 4317610Abstract: A holographic terrain surface display system for simulating the visual scs available to a trainee pilot with respect to a terrain surface. The holographic terrain surface display system according to the present invention comprises a holographic film, having a plurality of holograms, illuminated by a laser light beam. The laser light beam is focused on one of the plurality of holograms to generate a real image of the terrain surface. The real image of the terrain surface is then projected onto a spherical front projection screen to be observed by the trainee pilot, at a remote location, through a closed circuit television system.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1979Date of Patent: March 2, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Denis R. Breglia, Alfred H. Rodemann

Patent number: 4207688Abstract: A pilot training simulator system is disclosed that simulates a predetermd vehicle and the operational environment pertinent to the vehicle in such manner that the pilot being trained in the system may be responsive to the realistic impressions effected by this combination. Included in the system is a first subsystem for producing a video readout of various terrain and target scenes, a simulated vehicle cockpit second subsystem to which the terrain and target scenes are provided, and a third subsystem for providing a motion picture to the windshield of the simulated vehicle cockpit. A motion generator imparts realistic movements to the first subsystem and simulated vehicle cockpit, and console controls permit the manual operational control of both.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1977Date of Patent: June 17, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: George Derderian, Windell N. Mohon, Eugene D. Maldonato, Alfred H. Rodemann

Patent number: 4019262Abstract: A laser type direct fire weapon simulator for action against a moving image isplay wherein the weapon is slaved connected to variable voltage producing devices such as potentiometers to provide voltage outputs corresponding to azimuth and elevation positions of the weapon, a voltage responsive beam deflector system for varying the direction of the laser beam on the display target in accordance with the azimuth and elevation voltages, a continuous reading delay monitor responsive to a delay voltage derived from the elevation voltage to provide prior time readout voltage data to an electro-optical system directing the laser beam such that when actuated the system shows the location where a missile would have hit allowing for delay time corresponding to elevation voltage, together with a delay trigger circuit which delays the display of the hit until the elapse of missile flight time corresponding again to elevation voltage and hence range.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1975Date of Patent: April 26, 1977Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Denis R. Breglia, Alfred H. Rodemann, David T. Long

Patent number: 3991486Abstract: A landing signal officer trainer having a cylindrically rolled holographic ilm with stored attitude data of yaw and pitch rotatably and slidably mounted in conjunction and relation to a laser beam source to vary yaw and pitch image attitude of a plane, a pechan prism rotatable to vary roll of the plane image, a zoom lens system to vary range of the plane image, enlarging lens apparatus to present an adequate image to a landing signal officer (LSO) observing the image, and a control panel operable by an instructor to vary the plane attitude and range position in accordance to the signals given by the trainee and thus provide unprogrammed training in guiding landing aircraft without use of actual equipment and in a manner in which the trainee participates. The invention further contemplates the provision of a ship holographic image variable in pitch and control apparatus for selectively coordinating plane range and ship pitch to produce land or abort conditions.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1975Date of Patent: November 16, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: George Derderian, Alfred H. Rodemann, Windell N. Mohon, John W. Pease
