  • Publication number: 20110065943
Abstract: A method for the selective esterification of free fatty acids, alone or in triglycerides, with C1-C8 aliphatic alcohols or diols. The method uses a selective heterogeneous esterification catalyst. The catalyst is contacted with a reaction mixture containing a triglyceride having at least 0.5% free fatty acids, or a reaction mixture containing only free fatty acids, and a C1-C8 aliphatic alcohol or diol under conditions suitable for esterification.
    Type: Application
    Filed: September 16, 2009
    Publication date: March 17, 2011
Inventors: Rajiv Manohar Banavali, Alfred Karl Schultz
  • Publication number: 20100121087
Abstract: A method for esterification of free fatty acids with methanol. The method has steps of: (a) contacting a heterogeneous esterification catalyst in a reactor with a reaction mixture containing: (i) methanol and (ii) a triglyceride mixture containing 70-99.8 wt % triglycerides and 0.2-30 wt % free fatty acids, under conditions suitable for esterification, to produce a product stream; (b) separating water and methanol from the product stream to produce a dried product stream; (c) contacting the dried product stream with methanol to produce a methanol-rich phase and a triglyceride-rich phase; and (d) separating the methanol-rich phase and recycling it to the reactor.
    Type: Application
    Filed: May 21, 2009
    Publication date: May 13, 2010
Inventors: Rajiv Manohar Banavali, Robert Tryon Hanlon, Alfred Karl Schultz
  • Patent number: 7700703
Abstract: New polymeric additive including one or more ethylenically unsaturated surfactant monomers are described having a number average molecular weight less than 40,000 and having an improved balance of tack, adhesion, plasticity and peel strength and water whitening resistance as compared to other polymer additives.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 1, 2005
Date of Patent: April 20, 2010
    Assignee: Rohm and Haas Company
Inventors: Katherine Anne Hughes, Alfred Karl Schultz
  • Publication number: 20090275769
Abstract: A continuous process for esterification of fatty acids in glyceryl esters with C1-C8 aliphatic alcohols in a tubular reactor. The method uses an expanded resin catalyst bed in the tubular reactor.
    Type: Application
    Filed: April 30, 2009
    Publication date: November 5, 2009

  • Publication number: 20090156847
Abstract: A method for purification of crude triglycerides to be used as a raw material for production of biodiesel fuel. Crude triglycerides are contacted with a variety of adsorbents and ion exchange resins to reduce the levels of impurities.
    Type: Application
    Filed: December 14, 2007
    Publication date: June 18, 2009
Inventors: Rajiv Manohar Banavali, Robert Tryon Hanlon, Alfred Karl Schultz, Jose Antonio Trejo
  • Publication number: 20090156844
Abstract: A method for production of stabilized fatty acid methyl esters. The method removes unsaturation present in fatty acid methyl esters, or removes unsaturation in triglycerides, which are then transesterified to fatty acid methyl esters.
    Type: Application
    Filed: December 14, 2007
    Publication date: June 18, 2009
Inventors: Rajiv Manohar Banavali, Shih-Ying Hsu, Alfred Karl Schultz
  • Patent number: 7534923
Abstract: A method for purification of crude glycerol, especially crude glycerol derived from biodiesel production using alkaline catalysts. The method comprises combining the crude glycerol with acid, separating a glycerol layer, and treating the glycerol layer to decolorize it.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 5, 2008
