  • Patent number: 5629014
Abstract: Devices for the controlled release of an active agent to the skin or mucosa of a host are disclosed, which devices are laminates of a cellular foam layer having a first surface and a second surface, which foam layer has an active agent incorporated therein; a backing layer having an inner surface and an outer surface, wherein the inner surface is affixed to the second surface of the foam layer so that the active agent cannot permeate from the second surface of the foam layer through the outer surface of the backing layer; and means for affixing the laminate to the skin or mucosa of the host so that the active agent is capable of being continuously released from the first surface of the foam layer thereto. Methods for assembling the laminate devices are also disclosed, as are methods in which the foam layer is formed from a prepolymer solution on the backing layer. Methods are also disclosed for the polymerization of cellular urethane foams having active agents uniformly dispersed therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4915102
Abstract: Devices for applying film layers and/or active agent carriers to the skin are disclosed, including a liner layer having a release surface, a carrier layer for the film layer, a first adhesive between the carrier layer and the film layer, and a second adhesive between the liner layer and the opposite surface of the film layer and carrier layer. In this manner, the film layer is sandwiched between the liner layer and carrier layer, and the coefficients of adhesion of the two adhesives are selected so that upon separation of the liner layer and the carrier layer the film layer remains on the carrier layer, and upon application of the film layer to the skin, the film layer transfers from the carrier layer to the skin. The device preferably includes a hinge permanently connecting a peripheral edge of the carrier layer to the liner layer in order to facilitate this process, and in a preferred embodiment an active agent carrier is either substituted for or added to the film layer.

  • Patent number: 4710191
Abstract: A therapeutic device in the nature of a transdermal administration system is disclosed for administration of a medicament to the skin or mucosa of a host. The device is provided with a reservoir for containment of the medicament which is isolated by means of a peelable heat sealed area with respect to an adhesive layer provided for adhering the device to the host. In this manner, contamination and deterioration of the adhesive layer, contamination of the active agent, and trapping of the active agent in the adhesive layer are all avoided.

  • Patent number: 4573996
Abstract: A device is disclosed for administration of an active agent to a host, e.g., for transdermal administration. The device includes an impermeable adhesive layer which surrounds the permeable adhesive layer of the device and which with the outer surface layer of the device forms a pocket so that, when the device is adhered to the skin or mucosa, the active agent can be released to the skin or mucosa to provide a continuous dose of the active agent to the skin or mucosa but cannot permeate through the outer surface layer or radially outwardly through the active agent impermeable adhesive layer.
