Patent number: 7664828Abstract: Implementations are described and claimed herein to detect an invalid policy that may reside in a cache at a client. An expired policy is removed from cache and a current policy is requested. Otherwise the cached policy may be used. The client indicates which policy it is using by generating a policy digest, including, in compressed form, one or more assertions. If the host determines the policy digest is invalid, the host issues an invalid digest fault. If the policy digest is valid, but the assertions included in the policy digest are invalid, the host issues an invalid policy fault. In either case, the client is notified that the cached policy is no longer valid and that a current policy should be requested.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2004Date of Patent: February 16, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Jeffrey C. Publication number: 20070022164Abstract: The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for relaying messages through firewalls. A message relay negotiates first communication parameters with relay components inside a firewall and (potentially different) second communication parameters with applications outside the firewall. The message relay receives a message from an outside application in accordance with the second negotiated parameters and maps an electronic address in the received message to an inside application. The message relay transforms the message and sends the transformed message over an established connection through the firewall to a relay component in accordance with the first negotiated parameters. The relay component receives the transformed message and transforms the transformed message back into the message. The relay component delivers the message to the inside application in accordance with the second negotiated parameters.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2005Publication date: January 25, 2007Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Saurab Nog, Alfred Lee, Cesar Ruiz-Meraz, Umesh Madan

Publication number: 20060230432Abstract: The present invention provide for an algebraic mapping of a policy expression from a compact to a normalized form, both in Boolean and set formulations. The policy algebra is defined in such a way that policy alternatives within the normalized expression will be the same across equivalent compact expressions—regardless of how the assertions are arbitrarily constrained or what operators are used to constrain such equivalent expressions. Moreover, the present invention also provides a model for identifying alternatives that are equivalent by comparing only the root element names or QName of each assertion within an alternative. In addition, embodiments as described herein can utilize the identification of equivalent alternatives in order to create an intersection policy expression to limit alternatives of admissible behavior to those in common across both endpoints.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 8, 2005Publication date: October 12, 2006Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Alfred Lee, Ashok Malhotra, Elliot Waingold, Jeffrey Schlimmer, Stephen Millet

Publication number: 20060173854Abstract: A listener operating in user-mode can dispatch control of a client connection to a listener without exposing system memory or other sensitive services or components. For example, a client component requests access to a network component through connection with a user-mode listener. Based on information contained in the client request, the listener passes a call to an application program interface, which returns a first set of data that includes user-mode contextual information. The listener passes this first set of data to the requested network component. Another call is made to an application program interface, which includes the first set of data, and a request for socket duplication. The application program interface returns control of the requested socket to the network component, such that the network component and the client component communicate directly through the requested socket in user-mode.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2005Publication date: August 3, 2006Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Mauro Ottaviani, Alfred Lee, Elliot Waingold

Publication number: 20060174011Abstract: Preserving session state correlation in a distributed computing environment in which a service module instance receives messages from a general input buffer. The general input buffer is not accessed by a service module instance one the service module instance is determined to be recycled. After the service module instance receives a session initiation message through the general input buffer, a session-oriented input buffer is associated with the service module instance. Any subsequent session messages are then received by the service module via the session-oriented input buffer. Even if the service module instance was determined to be recycled mid-session, the service module instance would still operate to process all of the remaining session messages from the session input buffer, thereby preserving session continuity.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2005Publication date: August 3, 2006Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Lance Olson, Mauro Ottaviani, Anastasios Kasiolas, Michael Vernal, Michael Dice, Alfred Lee
