  • Patent number: 4312653
Abstract: A process for the production of coated glass bodies in which a glass layer is provided by a cycle including applying a glass forming material on a surface of a rotating body and transforming the glass forming material into the glass layer by locally heating a zone of the body and moving the local heating zone along the surface of the rotating body characterized by changing either the direction of rotation or initial point of commencing the rotation or both during the commencement of each cycle so that the effect of anisotropy of the plurality of glass layers is largely eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4302232
Abstract: A chemical vapor deposition process characterized by depositing a layer of glass on an interior surface of a tube with each cycle for depositing a layer comprising depositing a glass forming substance on the interior surface and subsequently converting the layer as the tube is rotated and between each cycle for each additional layer either changing the direction of rotation of the tube or the initial starting position for starting the transformation and maintaining an increased gas pressure within the tube during the entire forming step. In addition, when the tube is collapsed or formed into a rod so that an optical fiber can be drawn from an end thereof, the gas pressure is also maintained in the uncollapsed portion of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4298245
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improvement in a magneto-optical device having a light waveguide for conducting light characterized by the light waveguide being a cladded optical fiber having a core of quartz glass and a cladding of synthetic material. This improvement provides an improved method of using the magneto-optical device by suppressing distortions of polarized light by reducing birefringence in the waveguide by using a waveguide comprising an optical fiber having a quartz glass core and a cladding of synthetic material.

  • Patent number: 4243936
Abstract: A method is described for magneto-optical current measurements using a linearly polarized light beam in which the light beam is alternatingly polarized by polarization modulation at a given frequency in two orthogonal directions and the intensities of two signals corresponding to the two states of polarization are picked up sequentially at the frequency of the modulating signal and are processed simultaneously, eliminating the noise component of the measurement signal. The method is particularly useful for the measurement of currents in high voltage systems.

  • Patent number: 4232264
Abstract: An arrangement for the magneto-optical measurement of currents with a linearly polarized light beam in which the measuring path contains an analyzer with two orthogonal pass directions, over which the partial beams are conducted, has a light deflector which directs one partial beam alternatingly at a high frequency to a detector which is arranged in the other partial beam so that the detector receives alternatingly the measurement signal with the noise component and the noise component only.

  • Patent number: 4070620
Abstract: A magneto-optical measuring transducer for measuring high-voltage currents has a measuring sensing element positioned adjacent a conductor carrying the high-voltage currents to be measured. The sensing element is designed as a pair of similar and adjacent light conducting coils. The polarization plane of linearly polarized light within the coils is rotated according to the strength of a magnetic field produced by the current in the adjacent conductor. A compensator is also provided comprising a pair of light conducting coils. The compensator is spaced from and optically connected to the measuring sensing element. A variable magnetic field is provided adjacent the compensator and the change in polarization of light waves conducted within the compensator is detected by a detector and compared to the polarization of light fed through the measuring sensing element.
