  • Patent number: 4050130
Abstract: Method for mounting a cylindrical bearing having a closed end wall around a trunnion of a cross member of a universal joint by fitting the bearing in a bore of the corresponding yoke under such conditions that the end wall of the bearing affords an elastically yieldable support, optionally through intermediate means, for the end face of the trunnion. The method comprises giving to the end face of the trunnion and to the parts conjugate therewith, namely the end wall of the bearing and/or the intermediate means, such an arrangement that, in a first stage of said fitting, when the parts conjugate with the end face merely come in contact with the latter and possibly in mutual contact, a first axial distance between the open end of the bearing and the end face is distinctly less than a second axial distance which must be finally obtained between the open end of the bearing and the end face.

  • Patent number: 4010533
Abstract: The method for producing the transmission device including coupling means connected to a sleeve comprises forming a collar from an apertured blank of the coupling means and cold forming projecting portions on the outer surface of the collar for connecting the collar to rotate with the sleeve. The projecting portions may be formed by expanding the collar in a die from which die the collar is removed before connection to the sleeve. Alternatively, the projecting portions may be formed by radially expanding the collar in the sleeve whose inner surface has projecting portions which form the projecting portions of the collar upon contact with the collar during the expansion of the latter.

  • Patent number: 3999816
Abstract: An annular race plate for a thrust rolling bearing having the feature that at least the connection region between the radial portion of the plate acting as a race for the rolling elements and an axial portion for engaging an axial support surface of a support is provided with gaps, such as apertures having a closed-curve contour or apertures defining circumferentially spaced tabs, so as to impart resilience to the axial portion. In the form comprising tabs the race plates may be stacked in a compact manner with tabs of one plate penetrating the gaps between the tabs of the adjoining plate.

  • Patent number: 3983765
Abstract: The pinion of a rack and pinion steering mechanism is assembled in a case by means of two bearings mounted on two bearing portions at each end of the pinion which are integral parts of the pinion. The bearings are capable of acting as two axial abutments for the pinion. One of the bearings is a cup acting as a smooth bearing. Longitudinally extending lubricating grooves are provided in the bearing portion within the cup. These grooves are extensions of the spare between roots of the gear teeth of the pinion and are machined by causing the tooth cutter to continue beyond the pinion and thereby cut the grooves in the bearing portion.

  • Patent number: 3977736
Abstract: The bearing structure for guiding two relatively moving parts comprises a first linear raceway and second linear raceway connected to the first raceway by two circularly-shaped passages for rolling elements interposed between the raceways. The first raceway has a convex transverse profile.

  • Patent number: 3976340
Abstract: The device comprises an elastically yieldable collar in the form of a thin-walled ring and there is engaged in this ring a thin sleeve which serves as a raceway for the rolling elements of the radial rolling bearing to be mounted by the device. The sleeve has an elasticity enabling it to deform radially under the action of forces transmitted thereto by the rolling elements and is preformed in accordance with an irregular profile which defines circumferentially of the sleeve alternately cylindrical segments defining a usual radial clearance of the rolling elements and inwardly offset cylindrical segments which define a passage for the rolling elements of reduced radial width.

  • Patent number: 3972574
Abstract: The thrust rolling bearing is to be axially supported by a radial surface of a support. The retaining means of the bearing comprise a first portion for retaining the cage and a raceway plate relative to each other and a second portion which is provided with maintaining means adapted to cooperate with complementary means on the support so as to maintain the bearing assembled with the support. The first and second portions are adjacent to each other at a circumferential edge of the raceway plate.

  • Patent number: 3964802
Abstract: Bearing having in a body two rectilinear inner raceways interconnected by semi-circular inner end surfaces, particular outer end surfaces defining roller re-circulation passages with the semi-circular inner surfaces, and rollers which roll along the raceways and pass round the re-circulation passage. The rollers are guided at the roller ends by guide surfaces and are exposed on one of the sides of the bearing body. The rollers are retained radially to within a predetermined distance from the rectilinear inner raceways by means associated with the rollers and disposed in grooves in the bearing body adjacent the guide surfaces. Alternatively, the means associated with the rollers may be engaged in grooves defined between an edge of an aperture in a plate and a part of the bearing body, the plate being interposed between the corresponding end of the rollers and a part of the bearing body and defining an end guide surface for the rollers.

  • Patent number: 3950834
Abstract: To produce on at least one of the end faces of opposed trunnions of the cross member of a universal joint a bearing surface for the end wall of a bearing cup, or for a resilient washer interposed between the cup end wall and the trunnion, there is chosen for the distance between the centre of the cross member and the centre region of the end face a value which is different from the value of the desired distance in joint operation. This centre region is then subjected to the action of a tool whose hardness exceeds that of the metal of the trunnion by causing the tool to travel such distance that the active surface of the tool occupies a position in which there is formed, by a cold upsetting of the metal, a centre bearing surface which is at a distance from a reference point, such as the centre of the cross member, which is substantially equal to the desired value of the distance in joint operation.

  • Patent number: 3934956
Abstract: The thrust bearing comprises an annular support within which at least one annular plate is retained. The plate defines either a planar slideway if the bearing is a smooth bearing or a planar raceway if the bearing is a rolling bearing. At least one axially deformable annular elastically yieldable member is retained in the support and applied against the plate.
