Abstract: The variegated shingle comprises a shingle layer having front and rear surfaces the front surface including a butt portion and a headlap portion. The shingle layer contains granules on the front surface forming a plurality of horizontal striations providing gradations having color values ranging from light to dark extending between a leading edge of the butt portion and an upper portion thereof. The striations include an upper striation along the upper portion, a lower striation closer to the leading edge, and an intermediate striation between the upper and lower striations. The upper striation is darker in color value than the lower striation, whereas the intermediate striation is no darker in color value than the upper striation and no lighter in color value than the lower striation. The color values of at least one of the upper, lower, and intermediate striations vary across the granule layer.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a laminated roofing and siding shingle unit including (a) a rectangular shingle sheet having an undivided headlap portion and a lower butt portion divided into tabs of a given color which are uniformly spaced from each other, each tab having two opposing bottom corners defining the bottom boundary of the butt portion and (b) an elongated undivided top strip of the same or a contrasting hue or color having indentations at its bottom edge conforming in outline to the corners of the tabs, said strip affixed over the shingle sheet at the upper tab boundaries where the tabs depend from the headlap and positioned in an offset manner so that each indentation corresponding to a corner of a tab is centered above the tab immediately below.

Abstract: This invention relates to a composite shingle which includes (a) a rectangular shingle sheet having an undivided headlap portion and a lower butt portion which is divided into spaced apart tabs and (b) an elongated backup strip of hue or color contrasting with said shingle sheet, positioned under the tabs of said butt portion and secured to the lower portion of the headlap, the bottom edge of said strip conforming in outline to the bottom edge of said tabs and extending below said tabs at a distance equal to the spaces between the tabs, so as to form a uniform border around tabs.

Abstract: This invention relates to a unitary roofing shingle sheet comprising (a) an undivided cop section having an unexposable upper portion and a lower portion carrying a partially exposable horizontal band of distinguishable colors or color patterns and (b) exposable tabs in a butt bottom section depending from the lower boundary of the band in the partially exposable portion of (a); the exposable portions of said shingle being covered with weather resistant granules of distinguishable hues or patterns disposed in discrete exposable areas in the band of section (a) and on each of said tabs so as to provide a distinctive color or pattern for each tab and a contrasting color or color pattern above each tab in the adjoining exposable portion of said band of section (a).

Abstract: This invention concerns a light weight sheet felt material suitable for use as roof and siding underlayment and insulation board facing which comprises on a dry basis(a) 60-80 wt. % cellulose fibers;(b) 15-30 wt. % glass fibers having a diameter of 5 to 16 microns and a length of 3/8-3/4 inch;(c) 4-10 wt. % binder and(d) 0.5-10 wt. % non-asphaltic, sizing agent having a flash point above 150.degree.F. and an evaporation rate less than one which is selected from the group consisting of anionic rosinous and amphipathic ester and anhydride sizes and mixtures thereof.The felt of this invention is of considerably lighter weight and higher porosity than other felting materials used for the same purpose and can be supplied in longer continuous sheet rolls than heretofore practical from a standpoint of handling, shipping, storage, and installation. Also the present sheet felt can be produced on conventional felt making equipment in a one step process.
