  • Patent number: 7497104
Abstract: A rolling stand includes at least one roller having a roller journal which is rotatably supported by an eccentric bushing which in turn is rotatably supported by a low-friction bearing unit. An adjusting mechanism exerts an adjusting force on the eccentric bushing for rotating the eccentric bushing with respect to the housing and maintaining the eccentric bushing in a desired position. In order to determine a rolling force in the rolling stand, the eccentric bushing is rotated to a desired position relative to the housing by the adjusting mechanism, and an effective adjusting force in the adjusting mechanism is measured when the eccentric bushing is held in the desired position. The rolling force can then be ascertained on the basis of the measured adjusting force.

  • Patent number: 6792781
Abstract: An arrangement for inclined rolling of tube-shaped or bar-shaped rolling products comprises at least two rollers adapted to receive therebetween a rolling product so as to determine a longitudinal axis of the rolling product, the rollers are driveable and are rotatable about said longitudinal axis. The rollers have roller axes inclined at an inclination angle relative to the longitudinal axis, the roller axes being inclined in such a plane which, when considered in or against the longitudinal axis, extends parallel to the longitudinal axis at a radial distance from it, and a driving unit for driving the rollers. The driving unit includes a sun gear and drive gears provided with an axis-offset bevel gear toothing and surrounding a respective one of the roller axes, the drive gears engaging with the sun gear so that the rollers are driven by the sun gear through the drive gears.

  • Patent number: 5685187
Abstract: An arrangement for inclined rolling of tube-and bar-shaped rolling articles has two or more driven rollers rotatable about a longitudinal axis of a rolling article and supported in or on a rotor which surrounds the rolling article. The rotor is arranged in a stationary housing which is closed from all sides to provide a compact and efficient arrangement allowing an especially high rotary speed. Moreover, the arrangement with the inclined rollers rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the rolling product allow a fast exchange of the whole arrangement by a pre-assembled second arrangement so that stoppage of the whole arrangement during a roller exchange or a change in the roller adjustment is substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 4909058
Abstract: In a method of controlled rod or wire rolling of alloy steel, for example austenitic steel, in a rolling mill comprising a plurality of roll blocks (1, 2, 3) each having a plurality of roll stands, the temperature of the alloy steel being rolled in brought to a predetermined value in its passage between the blocks (1, 2, 3) by positive cooling by a cooler (6, 7) and/or positive heating by a heater (10, 11). Rolling at a specified temperature, or a specified temperature differential between the surface and the core, of the alloy steel being rolled is thus made possible.

  • Patent number: 4523622
Abstract: In the manufacture of hollow metal ingots, particularly for producing seamless tubes, the liquid melt is poured rapidly into an upright or slightly inclined chill mould, the chill mould is closed and is tilted into a substantially horizontal position in which it is slowly rotated about its longitudinal axis. The hole is produced in the hollow ingots by pouring into the chill mould a quantity of melt which corresponds to the total volume of the chill mould plus the shrinkage volume and less the volume of the desired hole. The method is particularly advantageous when manufacturing hollow ingots of great length, although the method can also be used when manufacturing short hollow ingots. It is particularly advantageous to blow in an accurately dimensioned quantity of inert gas, corresponding to the hole in the hollow ingot, during and after the actual pouring operation.

  • Patent number: 4487247
Abstract: A thin walled chill mould is provided with several cooling chambers by which the intensity of cooling can be varied during casting. During pouring, cooling of the lowermost chamber is commenced first and with low intensity. As filling continues, cooling by the other cooling chambers is commenced successively and at increasing intensities. After filling is complete, cooling is continued at these different intensities until the mould has been closed and tilted to the horizontal. Thereafter cooling is continued at maximum intensity in all chambers while the mould is rotated about its longitudinal axis. The method and the chill mould are provided particularly for the manufacture of long, slender ingots, billets or the like, particularly for the manufacture of seamless tubes. Corresponding control of the cooling operation avoids fissures and facilitates ejection of the ingot from the chill mould.

  • Patent number: 4391357
Abstract: A coupling is provided in which a coupling member and coupling sleeve of a rotary coupling for coupling a drive transmission to a rolling mill stand input shaft have mating taper threads which provide torsional rigidity and facilitate quick engagement and release. Engagement and release are effected by slowly turning the coupling half by means of the drive transmission while a brake device engages dogs on the coupling half to prevent the latter rotating. The coupling sleeve is flexibly attached to the flange by sheet metal laminate compensating elements but mobility of the sleeve is restricted by a support element on a shaft extension.

  • Patent number: 4320646
Abstract: A cooling conveyor arrangement for rolled wire or wire rod which has left a water cooler has a loop-forming device which deposits the wire in overlapping loops on an air-cooling conveyor. To obtain a shorter cooling path, which is desirable for high-grade steels to reduce the rate of cooling, the loops fall onto a conveyor portion and are carried by a conveyor portion to a coil-forming station where the loops are collected. To obtain a longer cooling path a removable conveyor portion is switched into place so that the loops are carried along a conveyor portion to an opening where they fall onto a conveyor portion. A conveyor portion is swung into alignment with the portion carrying the loops to feed the loops to the coil-forming station.
