Determining that PDEF expression is absent or low and survivin expression is present identifies the individual as a candidate to receive a treatment with a DNA methylation inhibitor. The method also includes communicating the result of identifying an individual as a candidate for receiving a DNA methylation inhibitor to a health care provider.
