  • Patent number: 8412225
Abstract: A method for preventing the occurrence of overload conditions in a multi-carrier communication system such as, but not limited to, enhancements to 1xEV-DV by controlling the amount of voice and data users having access to the communication system in order to provide enhanced QoS and load balancing. The method includes converting one of carriers in the multi-carrier voice/data system to a voice-only carrier when loading exceeds a given threshold related to QoS and outage criteria.

  • Patent number: 7551588
Abstract: A wireless communications network includes a mobile station and base station communicating an indicator of an autonomous data rate supportable over a reverse wireless link between the mobile station and base station. The mobile station and base station also communicate a flag indicating whether autonomous is enabled for the mobile station. In response to the flag indicating that autonomous mode is enabled, data is communicated, over the reverse wireless link, at a data rate less than or equal to the autonomous data rate without the base station having to first schedule the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 7327716
Abstract: A mobile station transmits sub-packets at a specified transmission rate or an autonomous transmission rate based on a PERSISTENCE bit. The mobile station increments, decrements, or does not change the transmission rate when the PERSISTENCE bit is a second logic state and a rate control bit (RCB) value is a first, a second, or a third value. Another embodiment of the present invention includes an ALL_ACID_IND bit that instructs the mobile station to adjust the specified transmission rate for either a single H-ARQ channel or for all H-ARQ channels. In an alternate embodiment, the mobile station uses the RCB in conjunction with a NAK to adjust a transmission-to-pilot ratio. After the NAK, the mobile station monitors the RCB value to increase the transmission rate, decrease the transmission rate, or not to change the transmission rate of subsequent sub-packets of the same data packet.

  • Patent number: 6868271
Abstract: A cellular communications system uses FCS (fast cell switching) for forward communications links, for communicating data from respective cells or sectors to a mobile terminal, in response to FCS requests by the terminal on a reverse communications link. An FCS rate, or rate of said requests, is varied in dependence upon a C/I reliability criterion, which represents a reliability with which C/I is determined and predicted by the mobile terminal, for example being either of two selected rates depending upon a comparison of the criterion with a threshold. The criterion can be, for example, a determined speed of the mobile terminal, or an averaged probability that a C/I prediction error is less than a predetermined amount.
