  • Patent number: 5563307
Abstract: Novel fluid mixtures of specified hydrocarbons meeting an array of structural criteria are described. Linear hydrocarbons having terminal double bonds and internal segments of specified differing chain lengths separated by one or more carbon atom(s) each of which has a methylidene substituent make up one group of such compounds. Another group is alkenyl end-capped compounds of the first group. Third and fourth groups are products formed by hydrogenation of the first and second groups, respectively. The products, whether end-capped or not, and whether hydrogenated or not, have desirable lubricating properties such as suitably low pour points and/or low NOACK volatility and/or very high viscosity index and thus can be used as base oils or as components in formulating lubricants.

  • Patent number: 5516958
Abstract: .alpha.,.omega.-Diene oligomers which are useful as synthetic lubricants are prepared by oligomerizing a .alpha.,.omega.-diene using a trialkylaluminum catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5498815
Abstract: A synthetic oil is made by a process comprising the steps of (a) reacting a vinylidene olefin in the presence of a catalyst to form an intermediate mixture which contains at least about 50 weight percent dimer of said vinylidene olefin, and (b) adding a vinyl olefin to said intermediate mixture and reacting said intermediate mixture and said vinyl olefin in the presence of a catalyst so as to form a product mixture which contains said dimer of said vinylidene olefin and a codimer of said added vinyl olefin with said vinylidene olefin.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 13, 1991

  • Patent number: 5290945
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing a white bisimide product which principally contains N,N'-alkylene-bis(tetrabromophthalimide) or N,N'-bis(tetrabromophthalimide). The process features: providing, in a reaction vessel, a solution containing tetrabromophthalic anhydride and a solvent which contains at least about 15 weight percent of a mono-, di- or tri- carboxylic acid having a dissociation constant not higher than 1.0.times.10.sup.-3 at 25.degree. C.; forming a reaction mass by adding to the solution a diamine or a diamine salt formed by the partial or total diamine neutralization of a mono-, di- or tri- carboxylic acid having a dissociation constant not higher than 1.0.times.10.sup.-3 at 25.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 5284988
Abstract: A synthetic oil is made by a process comprising (a) isomerizing at least a portion of a vinylidene olefin feed to form an intermediate which contains tri-substituted olefin and (b) reacting said intermediate and at least one vinyl olefin in the presence of a catalyst to form a synthetic oil which comprises a co-dimer of said vinylidene olefin and said vinyl olefin.

  • Patent number: 4992557
Abstract: In a first embodiment this invention relates to a process for preparing a white product which principally contains a bisimide. The process comprises: providing tetrabromophthalic anhydride and a solvent in a reaction vessel; forming, at a temperature within the range of from about 140.degree. C. to about 200.degree. C., a reaction mass by adding a diamine, a diamine salt or a mixture thereof to the solution, the formation of the reaction mass resulting in the production of a bisimide precipitate which becomes a component of the reaction mass; terminating the addition of the diamine when the molar ratio of the tetrabromophthalic anhydride initially present in the solution to the diamine or diamine salt added is substantially stoichiometric; cooking the bisimide precipitate to increase the average sphericity of the particles making up the bisimide precipitate; and recovering from the reaction mass, as the bisimide product, the cooked precipitate.
