    Abstract: The present invention features methods and compositions for the treatment or inhibition of infection by human papillomavirus (HPV) in a subject by administering an agent (e.g., a small molecule or antibody) that binds the carboxy-terminal region of the HPV L2 protein and reduces or inhibits the binding of the L2 protein to an intracellular molecular motor protein (IMMP) or IMMP co-factor. The invention also features a method for treating or inhibiting an HPV infection by administering a nucleic acid molecule that, for example, decreases the expression of the HPV L2 protein.
