  • Publication number: 20030210668
Abstract: Techniques to mitigate the effects of link imbalance for the uplink between a terminal (or UE) and multiple base stations (or Node Bs). In one aspect, the serving base station (i.e., the one designated to transmit packet data to the terminal) monitors the uplink received SNR for each terminal designated to receive packet data transmission. The serving base station then determines, based on the uplink received SNR and an SNR threshold, whether or not link imbalance potentially exists for each such terminal. In another aspect, if it is determined that link imbalance potentially exists, then a 3-way handshake is performed to check the reliability of a feedback mechanism used for packet data transmission. Appropriate responsive actions may then be performed based on the result of the check.

  • Publication number: 20030207696
Abstract: Techniques to implement MBMS services in a wireless communication system. In one aspect, a method is provided for processing data for transmission to a plurality of terminals. Frames of information bits (which may have variable rates) are provided to a buffer implementing a matrix. The matrix is padded with padding bits based on a particular padding scheme to support variable frame rates. The frames are then coded based on a particular block code to provide parity bits. The frame of information bits and the parity bits are then transmitted to the terminals. In another aspect, a method is provided for controlling the transmit power of a data transmission to a plurality of terminals. In accordance with the method, TPC streams are received from the terminals and processed to obtain a stream of joint power control commands used to adjust the transmit power of the data transmission.

  • Publication number: 20030174675
Abstract: Method and apparatus for reducing interference in a wireless communication system when the source of interference is a deterministic component of the system. In one embodiment, the receiver weights the transmitters according to when the source of interference is transmitted. Further, the transmitter may employ power boosting to overcome the source of interference. In one embodiment, a W-CDMA system transmits a sync channel concurrently with physical channels, wherein the sync channel is not orthogonal to the physical channels. The receiver may cancel the sync channel when receiving control or data information. Similarly, the receiver may weight the transmissions from multiple transmitters.

  • Publication number: 20030092382
Abstract: Techniques for determining valid (i.e., supported) TFCs from among all configured TFCs for normal and compressed modes. These techniques maintain sufficient historical information such that “TFC qualification” may be accurately performed. In a first scheme, Tx_power_requirement states are maintained for different combinations of each TFC. One combination is applicable for each TFC at each TFC interval, and valid TFCs are determined from applicable combinations in the proper state(s). In a second scheme, two Tx_power_requirement states are maintained for each TFC for the normal and compressed modes. In a third scheme, a single Tx_power_requirement state is maintained for each TFC for both modes based on a particular relative power requirement. In a fourth scheme, Tx_power_requirement states are maintained for a set of relative “bins” that cover the total range of required transmit power for all TFCs. And in a fifth scheme, a set of relative power requirement thresholds are maintained.

  • Publication number: 20030081586
Abstract: A method and apparatus provides for efficient use of communication resources in a CDMA communication system (100) by selecting, at a time prior to a first time period (401), a first mobile station to receive transmission during the first time period (401) on a downlink shared channel, and selecting, at a time prior to the first time period (401), a second mobile station to receive transmission during a second time period (402) on the downlink shared channel. Transmission power level of a downlink shared control channel is determined for transmission to the second mobile station during an overlapping time period (403) with the first time period (401), and the transmission power level of the downlink shared channel for transmission during the first time period (401) is determined based on at least the determined transmission power level of the downlink shared control channel during the overlapping time period (403).

  • Patent number: 6430415
Abstract: An apparatus and method for locating a remote station operating in analog mode, and that may not have a sense of network time, using an inverted GPS approach. The invention also enables remote stations operating in analog mode that do not know true GPS time to determine their own location. A time stamp, reflecting the approximate time a satellite range measurement is made, is assigned to the measurement at either the remote station or elsewhere in the network. The difference between true GPS network time and the measurement time is treated as a variable “error” in measurement, the length of which is unknown. This variable error is determined and used in determining the physical location of the remote station.

  • Patent number: 6289280
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in a hybrid position location system. The method and apparatus combines measurements from Global Positioning System (GPS) and terrestrial transceiver stations to compute the location of a device. An algebraic solution to hybrid position location system equations is output from the method and apparatus. The method and apparatus determines the position of a device using a non-iterative method, as against the use of a conventional iterative least mean square method. The method of the present invention can be used to solve the location system equations in scenarios where a non-iterative solution is desirable. In certain scenarios, the location system equations may have two possible solutions. An iterative method would converge on one of the solutions, without any indication of the existence of the other ambiguous solution. Moreover, the iterative method may converge on the incorrect of the two ambiguous solutions.

  • Patent number: 6188354
Abstract: An apparatus and method for locating a remote station in a synchronous communications network using the time of arrival of a reference pilot signal at the remote station as a time reference. The time difference of arrival (TDOA) of GPS signals received by the remote station and other signals received from a base station, are measured relative to this reference time. From these measurements, the location of the remote station is determined. The invention treats the location issue as a TDOA problem.

  • Patent number: 6134483
Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficiently transmitting location assistance information to a mobile communication device over a control channel with a minimal impact on the capacity of the control channel. A position location server provides a difference between satellite locations which have been computed using Almanac data and then Ephemeris data. Sending only the difference between the locations and satellite clock corrections computed using the two different data types, the total amount of information to be transmitted to a mobile communication device is significantly reduced. Furthermore, by providing rate of change information, the method and apparatus allows the location assistance information to remain valid for a relatively long time after it is has been received by the mobile communication device.
