  • Patent number: 5461017
Abstract: An improved catalyst for the polymerization of olefins comprising at least one metallocene and at least one aluminoxane co-catalyst supported on a substrate comprising a cross-linked polymeric, porous, resin wherein at least one of the monomers in the resin has at least one pendant functional group which is not reactive under the conditions of the formation of the substrate, and therefore survives the copolymerization which forms the substrate. One specific cross-linked resin is a copolymer of styrene, divinyl benzene and acetoxy styrene.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 4, 1994
Date of Patent: October 24, 1995
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Allan B. Furtek, Ronald S. Shinomoto
  • Patent number: 5455214
Abstract: A catalyst precursor composition comprises the reaction product of a cation exchange resin containing trityl carbonium ions contacted with a metallocene. The process of producing the reaction product of a cation exchange resin containing trityl carbonium ions contacted with a metallocene comprises(1) providing a cation exchange resin which has cations,(2) contacting the cation exchange resin with a solution comprising a trityl halide complex and solvent therefor to form an intermediate; and(3) contacting the intermediate with a metallocene, preferably a zirconocene salt. The resulting composition can be used to form ethylene resins in an alumoxane free system.

  • Patent number: 5118648
Abstract: Supported olefin, e.g., alpha-olefin, polymerization catalyst compositions, such as Ziegler-Natta catalysts, are modified by using porous, polymer particles having an average pore diameter of at least about 10 .ANG. as the catalyst support. The resulting catalyst composition is more active than refractory oxide-supported catalysts and it is not susceptible to deactivation by catalyst poisons, such as oxygen or water. Additionally, the polymer particles need not be calcined prior to the catalyst synthesis.

  • Patent number: 4983694
Abstract: An olefin, particularly alpha-olefin, supported catalyst composition, containing a transition metal or a compound thereof and an activator, has an average pore diameter of about 20 to about 300 Angstroms, at a substantially constant catalyst particle size for a given range of average pore diameters. The catalyst produces polymers having gradually decreasing molecular weight distribution with decreasing pore size of the catalyst at a constant particle size.

  • Patent number: 4769429
Abstract: A supported solid catalyst composition for polymerizing alpha-olefins is prepared by treating a carrier with a transition metal compound. The carrier utilized in the synthesis must have such an average pore diameter that the resulting catalyst composition has an average pore diameter of at least about 170 Angstroms. The catalyst composition has higher productivity than similar catalyst compositions of lower average pore diameter, and it produces polymers of lower density and higher melt and high load melt indexes than such similar catalyst compositions of lower average pore diameter. Also disclosed is a process for polymerizing alpha-olefins in the presence of the catalyst of the invention.
