  • Patent number: 10654557
Abstract: A skin for an aircraft is configured to be disposed on a first rigid member and on a second rigid member. The second rigid member is movable with respect to the first rigid member and a distance is defined between the first rigid member and the second rigid member. A morphing member of the skin extends between the first rigid member and the second rigid member. The morphing member comprises first segments forming a first portion attached to the first rigid member and second segments forming a second portion attached to the second rigid member. The first and second portions are separated along a substantially linear seam in the absence of change in the distance and an orientation between the first rigid member and the second rigid member.

  • Patent number: 9856012
Abstract: A morphing wing for an aircraft includes first and second structural ribs with four active members and four passive members connected therebetween. First and second active members and third and fourth active members attach at first and second positions. The first and third active members and the second and fourth active members attach at third and fourth positions. A first passive member connects between third and fifth positions. A second passive member connects between second and seventh positions. A third passive member connects between fourth and sixth positions. A fourth passive member connects between first and eighth positions. Adjustment of the four active members morphs the wing from a first configuration to a second configuration. The first and second positions are at corners of a first quadrilateral diagonally opposite to one another. The four passive members attach to the first structural rib at the corners of the first quadrilateral.

  • Publication number: 20170305525
Abstract: A skin for an aircraft is configured to be disposed on a first rigid member (182). The first rigid member has at least a portion of a structural frame for the aircraft. The skin is configured to be disposed on a second rigid member (184) that has at least a portion of the structural frame for the aircraft. The second rigid member (184) is movable with respect to the first rigid member (182) and a distance is defined between the first rigid member and the second rigid member. A morphing member of the skin extends between the first rigid member and the second rigid member. The morphing member compensates for at least one of a change in the distance and a change in an orientation between the first rigid member and the second rigid member.

  • Publication number: 20150151830
Abstract: A morphing wing for an aircraft includes a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading edge, a trailing edge, a tip, and a root. A plurality of structural ribs is disposed between the root and tip so that they extend between the top surface and the bottom surface and intersect with a lateral axis thereof. At least one active member connects between two adjacent structural ribs along or at a first angle to the lateral axis. The active member is actively adjustable. At least one passive member connects between the two adjacent structural ribs along or at a second angle to the lateral axis. The passive member is passively adjustable. Adjustment of at least one active member moves the adjacent structural ribs with respect to one another, thereby morphing the wing from a first configuration to a second configuration.
