Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing access device input format independent translations and route selection for telephony calls. A call request is received, the call request comprising input information being for a telephony call. At least one call attributes is then determined from the input information and a routing policy request is transmitted to query a route database. Responsive to the routing policy request a routing policy response is received, the response comprising at least one routing parameter. The at least one routing parameter is used to influence call set up. Route selection is therefore not constrained by the service request input format.
