  • Publication number: 20030041934
Abstract: The heat treatment of an age-hardenable aluminium alloy, having alloying elements in solid solution includes the stages of holding the alloy for a relatively short time at an elevated temperature TA appropriate for ageing the alloy; cooling the alloy from the temperature TA at a sufficiently rapid rate and to a lower temperature so that primary precipitation of solute elements is substantially arrested; holding the alloy at a temperature TB for a time sufficient to achieve a suitable level of secondary nucleation or continuing precipitation of solute elements; and heating the alloy to a temperature which is at, sufficiently close to, or higher than temperature TA and holding for a further sufficient period of time at temperature TC for achieving substantially maximum strength.

  • Publication number: 20020140126
Abstract: An apparatus and method for spinning bicomponent sheath/core filaments such that the filaments are uniformly quenched. The apparatus includes a distributor plate, and spinneret and a shim position between the distributor plate and the spinneret. The spinneret includes a plurality of holes positioned so that the density of holes is the lowest near the center of the spinneret and increases as radially proceed outward. More specifically, the holes are substantially configured in the shape of a parallelogram in which the sides of the parallelogram are all of equal length. Additionally, the shape of the parallelogram is more flatten the further the parallelogram pattern is located from the center of the spinneret. In this manner of positioning the holes, filaments therefrom do not significantly impede quench air from uniformly reaching filaments in the outer rows.

  • Publication number: 20020107321
Abstract: A polyurea-polymer formulation suitable for preparing a molded polyurea polymer includes a polyisocyanate, an isocyanate-reactive material, and a fatty-acid ester. The fatty-acid ester is present in an amount effective for providing a molded polyurea polymer prepared from the formulation with blister resistance such that when the molded polyurea polymer is exposed to moisture and a temperature of at least about 350° F. (177° C.), the molded polyurea polymer is substantially free of blisters. A fatty-acid ester suitable for use with these formulations can be natural or synthetic, and one example includes jojoba oil. A polyurea-polymer formulation can also include other components known to be useful with polyurea polymers such as fillers, catalysts, surfactants, and polyepoxides. A molded polyurea polymer can be prepared from a polyurea-polymer formulation. One method suitable for preparing a molded polyurea polymer includes reaction injection molding.

  • Patent number: 6401834
Abstract: An earth working tool assembly of the type including a tool shank terminating in a foot and an earth working tool or point which has a socket for engagement by the shank foot. A bridging member extends between the shank foot and point, the bridging member having a tongue at one end which is received in a channel on the underside of the shank foot and a channel at the other end which receives a rib on the underside of the point. The bridging member transfers a proportion of side loading on the tool point to the tool shank at a position rearwardly from the leading end of the foot of the tool shank so as that the shank has increased resistance to breakage or bending.

  • Patent number: 6312581
Abstract: A process for fabricating a silica-based optical device on a silicon substrate is disclosed. The device has a cladding formed in a silicon substrate. The device also has an active region, and that active region is formed on the cladding. The cladding is fabricated by forming a region of porous silicon in the silicon substrate. The porous silicon is then oxidized and densified. After densification, the active region of the device is formed on the cladding.

  • Patent number: 6195191
Abstract: Optical devices using non-centric crystals, such as lithium niobate, and methods for making and using the devices, are provided. The devices provide improved temperature stability as compared to conventional devices using non-centric crystals. The improved temperature stability is provided by etching the surface of a non-centric crystal to a depth of less than about 300 angstroms. The devices and methods of the invention reduce the magnitude of change in bias voltage required to maintain an optical crystal at a pre-selected operating point.

  • Patent number: 6157765
Abstract: An improved waveguide optical amplifier having an optically transparent first cladding layer, an optically transparent film doped with an optically active material, disposed over the first cladding layer, at least one undoped optically transparent film disposed over the doped film and coating etched walls of the doped film, and an optically transparent second cladding layer disposed over the undoped film. At least a portion of the undoped film disposed immediately adjacent the doped film has an index of refraction which is closer to the index of refraction of the doped film, than to the index of refraction of the second cladding layer and preferably equal thereto. The undoped film covers surface imperfections in the etched walls of the doped film, effectively moving them from the doped film/undoped film interface to the undoped film/cladding layer interface thereby reducing scattering of the high-intensity mode field.

  • Patent number: 6003194
Abstract: A three chambered hose cleaning and drying head which attaches to the back of a cleaning vehicle. The cleaning head allows hoses to pass through each of the three respective chambers. As a hose passes through the first of these chambers it is sprayed with an encircling high pressure stream of the cleaning fluid which effectively removes all dirt and debris from its surface. This chamber subsequently vacuums away the dirt debris and much of the excess cleaning fluid. The other two chambers are vacuum chambers which remove the fluid from the hose and transfer it back to the cleaning system in order to dry the clean hose. This system can easily be used each time the hose is loaded on the truck or any time as desired. Therefore, the hose stays clean and dry regardless of the condition in which the cleaner is being used.
