    Abstract: A heat exchanger in which a heat exchanger core is disposed within a casing which includes a side wall formed by bending a plate into the form of a sleeve in which edges of the plate are in adjacent, confronting relationship with an inwardly projecting, transversely extending deformation, the deformation being disposed between a pair of press members with one of the press members being transversely inserted within the sleeve. The press members are moved together to remove the deformation with resultant pivoting of the edges into abutting contact or overlapping relationship. The heat exchanger core is formed of a plurality of stacked plate pairs each having a plate in inverted orientation. Outwardly projecting ribs of anticlastic form are so formed in each plate that the ribs on each plate of each plate pair are interengagingly intersect with the ribs on the adjacent plate of the adjacent plate pair accurately to align the plate pairs in the heat exchanger core.

    Abstract: A heat exchanger is disclosed of the type having stacked plate pairs or tubes defining flow passages, with turbulizer located inside such flow passages. The turbulizers are of the expanded metal type having rows of convolutions. The convolutions are interrupted periodically to form non-convoluted pressure recovery zones located between or downstream of the convolutions. Also, the rows of convolutions can be grouped and spaced apart to provide longitudinal neutral zones between groups of adjacent rows of convolutions. The pressure recovery zones and longitudinal neutral channels reduce pressure drop in the heat exchanger without appreciably reducing heat transfer.

    Abstract: Self-enclosing heat exchangers are made from stacked plates having raised peripheral flanges on one side of the plates and continuous peripheral ridges on the other side of the plates, so that when the plates are put together, fully enclosed alternating flow channels are provided between the plates. The plates have raised bosses defining flow ports that line-up in the stacked plates to form manifolds for the flow of heat exchange fluids through alternate plates. Rib and groove barriers are formed in the plates inside the peripheral flanges and ridges. The barriers prevent short circuit flow on one side of the plates and promote flow to remote areas on the other side of the plates, to improve the overall efficiency of the heat exchangers.

    Abstract: A heat exchanger is disclosed for automotive lubricants and coolants wherein the heat exchanger has a calibrated bypass orifice located therein to maintain the flow therethrough at all times, particularly during cold flow operation, or high pressure transient conditions such as at engine start-up. The heat exchanger has a housing defining a fluid inlet chamber and a fluid outlet chamber. A separator is located between the inlet and outlet chambers and heat exchange passages are located between and communicate with the inlet and outlet chambers. The separator has a calibrated bypass orifice therethrough for the continuous flow of fluid between the inlet and outlet chambers bypassing the heat exchange passages.

The heat exchanger is made from a plurality of stacked plates formed of cladded metal, the plates being assembled into face-to-face pairs, each pair having a turbulizer located therein. The plates also have outwardly disposed dimples which are in contact when the plates are arranged back-to-back. The turbulizer is thicker than the spacing between the assembled plates prior to brazing the assembly, and a portion of the peripheral edges of the turbulizer is deformed or crimpled during assembly.

    Abstract: An offset strip fin for use in compact automotive heat exchangers is disclosed. The offset strip fin has multiple transverse rows of corrugations extending in the axial direction wherein the corrugations in adjacent rows overlap in order that the oil boundary layer is continually re-started. The fin dimensions have been optimized in order to achieve superior ratio of heat transfer to pressure drop along the axial direction. In one aspect, an compact concentric tube heat exchanger has an offset strip fin located in an annular fluid flow passageway located between a pair of concentric tubes. The preferred range of lanced lengths is determined to be between 0.035" to 0.075" for periodically developed flow. Maintaining the lanced length in the regime of periodically developed flow is advantageous in that it gives a higher heat transfer coefficient than is achievable with fully developed flow.
