    Abstract: An absolute position encoder includes a position location medium containing position identifier code words providing absolute position indications, and an optical source, an optical detector, an optics subsystem and a code word decoder. The optics subsystem focuses a source beam onto the position location medium and directs a return beam to the optical detector, detects a focus condition from the return beam, and automatically adjusts focus of the source beam to maintain a predetermined focus condition during operation. The code word decoder responds to the detector signal to detect a code word and generate a decoder output indicative of a corresponding code word value and corresponding detected position.

    Abstract: It has been unexpected found that the fluid resistance of hoses can be greatly enhanced by adding a chlorinated paraffin to a chlorinated polyethylene elastomer or a chlorosulfonated polyethylene elastomer which is used as the tubular inner core layer of the hose. Hoses made using this approach offer the advantage of having improved resistance to modern automotive fluids, provide a longer service life, and better reliability without compromising flexural characteristics or burst strength. Such hoses are comprised of (1) an elastomeric tubular inner core layer defining a lumen, (2) a friction layer, and (3) an elastomeric cover, wherein the elastomeric tubular inner core layer is comprised of (i) a chlorinated elastomer selected from the group consisting of epichlorohydrin, polychloroprene, chlorinated polyethylene and chlorosulfonated polyethylene, (ii) 1 phr to 50 phr of a chlorinated paraffin, and (iii) 30 phr to 120 phr of carbon black.

    Abstract: A waveguide-type dielectric filter suitable for wideband filter applications made of a metallized dielectric material is provided. The filter includes two or more mutually coupled resonators disposed in a longitudinal manner. The coupling between adjacent resonators is provided and adjusted by slots or through holes. The dielectric block is covered with metal ground coating with the exception of an uncoated area at the input and output that creates two contact pads on one surface of the dielectric block that are electrically isolated from the metal ground coating. Metallized blind holes are formed on the opposing surface of the dielectric block with respect to the contact pads. These blind holes effectively move the ground plane closer to the contact pad, which, in turn increases the coupling between the input and output resonators and external circuitry, which is essential for building wide bandwidth band pass filters.

    Abstract: A discrete resonator is provided, including a dielectric base having a dielectric constant. A metal contact formed on a major surface of the dielectric base has a predetermined area and is positioned at a predetermined location on the dielectric base to provide a predetermined loaded Q for the resonator. A metal ground coating is formed on the outer surface of the dielectric base with the exception of an isolation region surrounding the metal contact that is free of the metal ground coating. The area of the isolation region is sufficient to prevent significant coupling between the metal contact and the metal ground coating. The dielectric constant of the material used for the base, and the width and length of the dielectric base are each selected such that the resonator resonates at least at one predetermined resonant frequency in the GHz frequency range.

Specifically, the speckled tire tread includes a primary tread compound that serves as a matrix in which is distributed discrete particles of one or more secondary tread compounds, at least one of the compounds is a different color than the other tread compound(s) so as to be visually distinguishable. For example, the primary tread compound may include carbon black pigment and be black in color while the secondary tread compound can include one or more pigments to provide the particles with non-black color. Thus, the colored particles have a visually distinguishable color from that of the primary tread composition. Additionally, at least a portion of the particles may be situated for viewing on a running surface of the tire tread so that a subject can visually distinguish between the compounds, and such observed compounds may provide a different tire performance characteristic(s).

A control voltage applied between the metal contact and the metal ground coating provides at least one of (i) a variable electric field to control the dielectric constant and a resonant frequency of the resonator and (ii) a piezoelectric response causing a dimensional change in the resonator to control the resonant frequency of the resonator.
