  • Publication number: 20120022197
Abstract: Provided are compositions, processes for making, and processes for using mixed triglycerides as plasticizers. Triglyceride plasticizers can be produced by recovery of linear or branched C4 to C13 aldehydes from a hydroformylation product, oxidation to linear or branched C4 to C13 acids with oxygen and/or air, recovery of the resulting acids, combining the linear or branched C4 to C13 acid with benzoic acid, toluic acid or a combination thereof to form a mixed acid blend, and esterification of the mixed acid blend with glycerol, wherein the total carbon number of the triester groups ranges from 20 to 25 and includes from 1 to 2 aryl groups for greater than or equal to 45 wt % of the plasticizer. Such plasticizers can be phthalate-free and provide outstanding properties including a suitable melting or pour point, glass transition temperature, low volatility, increased compatibility, increased hydrolytic stability, and excellent low temperature properties in a range of polymeric resins.

  • Publication number: 20070293646
Abstract: Esters of cyclohexane polycarboxylic acids are used as plasticisers for polyvinyl chloride to enable products with comparable mechanical properties to be obtained using less polyvinyl chloride. Use of these esters also produces formulations with increased stability to ultra-violet light, improved low temperature properties, lower viscosity and improved processability as well as reduced smoke on burning. The esters of cyclohexane polycarboxylic acids may be used alone or in admixture with other plasticisers when the esters of cyclohexane polycarboxylic acids may act as viscosity depressants. Fast fusing plasticisers may also be included. The formulations are particularly useful in the production of a range of goods from semi-rigid to highly flexible materials and are particularly useful in the production of medical materials such as blood bags and tubing.

  • Publication number: 20070235687
Abstract: Mixtures of C8-10 primary alcohols, preferably C9 alcohol rich, comprise from 15 to 70 wt. % unbranched molecules, the balance being branched molecules having an average branchiness of at most 2.00 branches per molecule, at least 80% of the ranches being methyl branches and at least 50% of the branched molecules being mono-methyl branched. Plasticiser esters and surfactant derivatives derived from these alcohol mixtures are also provided. The alcohol mixtures are preferably produced by hydroformylation of octene rich streams formed by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

  • Publication number: 20060270868
Abstract: Esters produced by the catalyzed reaction of alcohols and acids or anhydrides are neutralized by treatment with an aqueous alkaline alkali metal salt solution in an amount that provides less than a stoichiometric amount of alkali metal salt in relation to the acidity of the crude ester and the amount of water present during the treatment is from 0.7 to 1.4 wt % of water based on the weight of crude ester. When using titanium as the esterification catalyst, the ester resulting from this process contains less than 0.01 ppm by weight of titanium residue, so that it is storage stable when stored in the presence of an antioxidant.
