  • Patent number: 6188441
Abstract: The data field synchronization segment as symbol coded for VSB transmission comprises pseudo-random noise (PN) sequence information that can be detected using a match filter in a QAM/VSB DTV signal receiver. The data field synchronization segment as symbol coded for QAM transmission does not contain the PN sequence information that can be detected using the same match filter used for detecting the PN sequence information in the VSB transmission. A threshold detector is used for determining whether the match filter response is of sufficient energy to indicate occurrence in a received DTV signal of the PN sequence information in the data field synchronization segment of a VSB DTV transmission. Timed latch circuitry is used for latching the indication for a period of time longer than at least one DTV data field. The QAM/VSB DTV signal receiver is operated either in a QAM reception mode or in a VSB reception mode, depending on the output signal of the timed latch circuitry.

  • Patent number: 6184921
Abstract: An N-level digitally encoded signal at a symbol rate fs substantially equal to three times the NTSC color subcarrier frequency, N being a plural integer, modulates a carrier signal of a frequency within a few hundred kilocycles of the NTSC audio carrier, for transmission through a channel subject at times to the presence of a co-channel NTSC analog television signal. The modulation is suppressed-carrier amplitude-modulation generating first and second amplitude-modulation sidebands. Any portion of the amplitude-modulation sidebands extending outside the channel is suppressed in the transmitted signal, thereby making the first amplitude-modulation sideband a vestigial sideband providing an image for only a portion of the second amplitude-modulation sideband closer in frequency to the carrier signal.

  • Patent number: 6137545
Abstract: A radio receiver uses the same tuner for receiving a selected wideband digital signal of at least a few megahertz bandwidth, such as a digital television (DTV) signal, irrespective of whether it is a quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) or a vestigial sideband (VSB) signal accompanied by an unmodulated pilot carrier signal; and a second transmission standard specifies quadrature amplitude modulation. It is determined at the receiver which of respective modulation formats specified for the various transmission standards is employed for transmitting the wideband digital signal being received. The wideband digital signal is demodulated to produce a demodulated signal, demodulation be done according to a demodulation format suitable for demodulating the modulation format determined to be employed for transmitting the wideband digital signal.

  • Patent number: 6124898
Abstract: A digital television signal receiver in a television set or in a digital video recorder digitizes received digital television signal as converted in frequency to a final intermediate-frequency band close to baseband, then performs equalization filtering on the digitized signal before demodulating it in the digital regime to regenerate baseband symbol coding. The equalization filtering is adaptive, and weighting coefficients for this filtering are adjusted in response to portions of the regenerated baseband symbol coding. Initial adjustment of the weighting coefficients is preferably done using selected portions of the data field synchronizing signal as a ghost cancellation reference signal, in order that convergence of the weighting coefficients to desired values proceeds more rapidly.

  • Patent number: 6118495
Abstract: Training signal for channel equalization is located in the initial data segment of each DTV data field and in the nineteenth scan line of each NTSC field. Arranging for training signal separated from plural PN sequences near the beginnings of the initial data segments of DTV data fields improves post-ghost detection capability in the DTV system. In receivers for receiving NTSC signals and DTV signals, arranging for training signal to be separated from plural PN sequences near the beginnings of the nineteenth scan line of each NTSC field facilitates the same ghost-cancellation and channel-equalization filtering being used both during the reception of NTSC signals and during the reception of DTV signals.

  • Patent number: 6108049
Abstract: A digital television signal receiver includes a data slicer for symbol decoding and match filtering to recover data synchronizing information from the symbol decoding results. The match filtering comprises a shift register for receiving as serial input thereto the parallel-bit-groups of symbol decoding results from the data slicer and respective decoders for the serial input signal to the first of a number of successive stages of the shift register and for the output signal of each stage in that number of successive stages. The decoder results are combined using an AND gate when match filtering is performed to detect data segment synchronization symbol code sequences. In other match filtering the decoder results are combined using a digital adder network, and a threshold detector responds to the summed decoder results exceeding a threshold value to detect data field synchronization symbol code sequences.

  • Patent number: 6104763
Abstract: A QAM/VSB digital television (DTV) receiver of plural conversion type uses the same circuitry up to a penultimate IF amplifier for receiving DTV signals no matter whether they use QAM or VSB modulation. The converter used for generating final IF signals when QAM modulation is received and the converter used for generating final IF signals when VSB modulation is received have respective mixers and respective local oscillators with separate automatic frequency and phase control. The use of such separate converters avoids a lock-out from VSB reception mode that otherwise can occur during the reception of DTV signals with VSB modulation.

  • Patent number: 6104442
Abstract: A radio receiver for receiving a selected digital HDTV signal, irrespective of whether it is a complex-amplitude-modulation (QAM) or a vestigial sideband (VSB) signal, using the same tuner. The tuner supplies a final IF signal in a 6 MHz frequency band, the lowest frequency of which is not appreciably more than 2.38 MHz. The final IF signal is digitized for synchrodyning to baseband, with the 2.375 MHz difference between the carrier frequencies of QAM and VSB signals being taken into account in the digital synchrodyning circuitry. The carrier frequencies of the QAM and VSB final IF signals are regulated to be submultiples of symbol frequency by applying automatic frequency and phase control signals developed in the digital circuitry to a local oscillator of the tuner. The presence of the pilot carrier accompanying a selected VSB HDTV signal is detected for automatically switching the radio receiver for operation in a VSB signal reception mode.

  • Patent number: 6057877
Abstract: A first comb filter differentially combines an I- or Q-channel baseband signal supplied as input signal to a co-channel NTSC interference detector for a DTV receiver with that signal as subjected to a first amount of differential delay. This generates a first comb filter response in which artifacts arising from synchronous detection of the co-channel interfering analog television signal are suppressed. The detector includes a second comb filter that combines the input signal with that signal as subjected to a second amount of differential delay to generate a second comb filter response in which artifacts of the co-channel interference are reinforced. The first and second comb filters both use the same type of linear combiner so the direct term of input signal is treated similarly in the first comb filter response and in the second comb filter response. First and second amplitude detectors detect the respective amplitudes of these comb filter responses.

  • Patent number: 6046781
Abstract: Radio receivers for receiving ATSC DTV signals or NTSC analog TV signals each use a single first detector for both types of signal that supplies its output signals to an intermediate-frequency amplifier chain for DTV signals and to another intermediate-frequency amplifier chain for analog TV signals. In some receivers the sound carrier of the NTSC signal has a separate, further IF amplifier chain. When DTV signals are determined to be received, or alternatively when analog TV signals are determined not to be received, the first detector is conditioned for automatic fine tuning in response to the pilot carrier of received DTV signal. When DTV signals are determined not to be received, or alternatively when analog TV signals are determined to be received, the first detector is conditioned for automatic fine tuning in response to the video carrier of received analog TV signal. The determination of whether or not DTV signal is received is made in response to the amplitude of DTV signal pilot carrier.

  • Patent number: 5995135
Abstract: Co-channel interference accompanying multiple-level symbols in a digital receiver, such as a digital television receiver, is suppressed by using a first comb filter to reduce the energy of the co-channel interference before data slicing. The first comb filter incidentally carries out a symbol re-coding procedure of first type that introduces error into the symbol decoding results generated by the data slicing. A second comb filter carries out a symbol re-coding procedure of second type after the data slicing is completed, to compensate for intersymbol error introduced by the symbol re-coding procedure of first type and generate corrected symbol decoding results. The symbol re-coding procedure of first type re-codes an input symbol stream through differential delay and first linear combination of the differentially delayed terms.

  • Patent number: 5966188
Abstract: A radio receiver uses the same tuner for receiving a selected digital television (DTV) signal, irrespective of whether it is a quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) or a vestigial sideband (VSB) signal. The final IF signal is digitized at a rate that is a multiple of both the symbol frequencies of the QAM and VSB signals, for synchrodyning to baseband. The carrier frequencies of the QAM and VSB final IF signals are regulated to be submultiples of the multiple of both the symbol frequencies of the QAM and VSB signals by applying automatic frequency and phase control (AFPC) signals developed in the digital circuitry to a local oscillator of the tuner. Baseband DTV signals obtained by synchrodyning the final IF signals have a sample rate higher than symbol rate to facilitate symbol synchronization. The baseband DTV signals are decimated to symbol rate before performing channel equalization to reduce the number of multipliers required in the channel equalization filter.
