Abstract: One embodiment of a system for rendering media files comprises a computer configured to determine media file formats that are used by media rendering devices connected to a network and to determine media files available on the network. The computer generates media shadow files of media file formats used by the media rendering devices to accompany existing media files available on the network in alternative formats.

An adapter means can be provided for coupling a first interface to a second interface, the second interface configured to accommodate the coupling of a peripheral device. A detector means can be provided for detecting the peripheral device. A means can be provided for communicating a first signal to a first bus when the peripheral device is not detected. Abstract: A data processing system aggregates media content from multiple clients to a server. The data processing system comprises a media manager that aggregates media content from a client of a plurality of clients onto a server. The media manager comprises a monitoring utility and a server media update utility. The monitoring utility periodically checks for media files that are newly added in a client library of the client plurality and/or scanned from client storage, and detects newly added media. The server media update utility determines whether the newly added media. The server media update utility determines whether the newly added media is present on the server and copies the newly added media to the server if the newly added media is not present on the server or a lower quality version of the newly added media is present on the server.
