  • Patent number: 4839995
Abstract: An abrading tool including a body to be held by a user and carrying a motor which moves a unit relative to the body to abrade a work surface by the action of a sheet of sandpaper or other work abrading element carried by the unit, with the unit containing a passage or passages through which a flow of air and entrained particles abraded from the work surface are drawn by suction, and with the unit carrying a flow control valve which is movable with the unit relative to the body of the tool by the motor and is operable to variably restrict the flow of air and particles by suction through the passage or passages in the unit. The movable unit may include a resiliently deformable cushion through which abrading force is applied to the sandpaper or other abrading element and a backing plate structure more rigid than the cushion and containing a chamber into which air and particles flow from passages in the cushion, with the flow control valve being carried by an upper wall of the backing plate structure.

  • Patent number: 4671019
Abstract: A portable abrading tool including a body which is adapted to be held by a user and which carries a motor, a head adapted to carry a sheet of sandpaper or other element for abrading a work surface, a drive connection for transmitting power from the motor to the head to power actuate the head relative to the body, preferably orbitally, and a flexible boot or other structure extending essentially about the drive connection and enclosing a space at the back of the head. The tool preferably contains suction passages which direct a vacuum induced flow of air and particles abraded from the work surface from a location near the work surface to a dust collection bag or discharge location without flow of the abraded particles through the mentioned enclosed space at the back of the head. The passages also direct a vacuum induced flow of air free of abraded particles from that enclosed space.

  • Patent number: 4671020
Abstract: A power driven sanding tool having a resiliently deformable backing pad to which a sheet of sandpaper is attached and by which the sandpaper is actuated to abrade a workpiece, with the pad containing internal passages through which a flow of air and abraded particles are drawn by suction from a location near the workpiece to a dust collection bag or the like, and with the pad containing an element more rigid than the deformable cushioning material of the pad and adapted to prevent deformation of the cushioning material by the force of the suction to thus avoid constriction of the air-flow passages by the force of the suction.

  • Patent number: 4660329
Abstract: A portable abrading or polishing tool including a motor which drives orbitally a head carrying a working pad to which sandpaper or the like may be attached, with the motor of the device driving a carrier about a first axis, and with the carrier mounting the head to turn relative thereto about a second axis. The head and carrier are connected together by bearings, preferably including a large bearing near the head and a smaller bearing offset toward the motor. A counterweight structure is connected to the carrier and located near the axially outer end of the bearings for close coupling with the head and reduction of vibration in use. Fasteners attaching the counterweight to the carrier may serve a secondary purpose of forceably pulling the head and bearings from the carrier during disassembly. An elastomeric handle extending over the motor prevents transmission of low temperatures to a user's hand, and cushions engagement with the motor.

  • Patent number: 4592170
Abstract: A portable abrading or polishing tool having a body adapted to be held by a user to manipulate the tool and carrying a motor which drives orbitally a part to which a head or shoe adapted to carry a sheet of sandpaper or the like is detachably connected for orbital abrading or polishing movement with the part. The head is attached to the part by a fastener, preferably a screw extending through an opening in a backing plate of the head, and is retained against rotation by an essentially tubular member or boot of flexible preferably elastomeric material extending between the body structure and the head. The tubular member has a first end which may be disposed about a portion of the body structure and be clamped thereto to detachably secure the head assembly to the body, and has a second end which is detachably connectable to the head, in a manner enabling alternate use of any of two or more heads of different shapes and sizes with the same motor and handle assembly.

  • Patent number: 4297114
Abstract: A vacuum cleaner having a rotor which is mounted to turn at the inside of a filter bag of the device, and which acts when turned to contact the bag and displace accumulated dust from its outer surface. The rotor may be actuable from the outside of the cleaner when a cover of the cleaner is in closed active condition. The rotor desirably includes one or more resiliently flexible arms which are deflectable to a reduced diameter condition by the bag when the bag is constricted inwardly against and about the rotor by the flow of suction air when the device is in use.

  • Patent number: 4145848
Abstract: A portable abrading tool with a rotary backing unit for carrying a disc of abrading material, with abraded particles being drawn through a passage or passages in the backing unit into a shroud carried at a rear side of that unit, and with the backing unit carrying a circular rib at its rear side projecting rearwardly within a peripheral edge portion of the shroud in axially overlapping relation to define a shoulder blocking centrifugally induced radially outward movement of abraded particles toward the edge portion of the shroud.

  • Patent number: 4145847
Abstract: A portable abrading tool having a shoe mounted for straight line reciprocating movement relative to a body, and driven by a reciprocating piston in the body through two spaced gear units, with a counterweight being driven by those gear units to reciprocate essentially with the piston and oppositely from the shoe, and with the counterweight desirably having two enlarged end portions and an intermediate reduced width portion carrying oppositely facing toothed racks engaging the two gear units respectively. The counterweight is desirably confined vertically between the body of the tool and the reciprocating shoe, and is slidably located within recesses in the under surface of the body.

  • Patent number: 4091576
Abstract: A sanding tool having a power driven shoe carrying a sheet of abrading material which is adhesively secured to the underside of the shoe and then extends upwardly at its forward end and then rearwardly at the top of the shoe to a position of retention of an end portion of the sheet between a spring urged clamping element and an opposed surface. The clamping element is urged toward that surface with a very light yielding force which remains the same during insertion of the sheet material as during an abrading operation, and which is light enough to enable the sheet to be pushed manually rearwardly between the clamping element and opposed surface against the frictional resistance offered thereby.
