  • Patent number: 4391087
Abstract: A twisting apparatus has a spindle extending along an upright axis, having an upper end and a rotatable lower end, and formed with a passage opening axially upwardly at the upper end and radially outwardly at the lower end. A bobbin support is rotatably carried on the spindle between the ends thereof and is provided with four angularly equispaced bobbin holders radially equispaced from the axis. Two of the diametrally opposite supports carry main bobbins and the other two carry reserve bobbins, with the leading ends of the yarns of the reserve bobbins being tied to the tail ends of the yarns of the main bobbins. The spindle is rotated about the axis while the bobbin support is held against rotation. The leading ends of the yarns of the main bobbins are led down through the passage and up around the bobbin support while the spindle is rotating to wind the yarns together and form a balloon around the support. The bobbins can be standard small-diameter bobbins such as come directly from a spinning machine.

  • Patent number: 4231531
Abstract: A machine wherein a yarn is fed at a constant delivery speed through a yarn eye to a yarn package rotated at a constant peripheral speed has a drive system connected to the yarn eye to reciprocate it at an irregular rate to wind the yarn irregularly on the package. This yarn eye is connected through a cam to a sun gear in mesh with a planet gear carried on a planet carrier and rotationally coupled to a starwheel. A control wheel and the planet carrier are continuously rotated at different speeds. This control wheel has formations which prevent the starwheel from rotating during part of each orbit of the starwheel about the machine axis and which rotate the starwheel at a fixed speed during another part of each orbit so that the displacement speeds of the cam and, hence, of the yarn eye alternate between two separate rates for most effective irregular winding.

  • Patent number: 4180967
Abstract: An apparatus for twisting together a first and second yarn has a frame extending in a longitudinal direction and carrying a row of upright spindles each having and rotatable about an upright spindle axis. A holder is carried on the frame above each spindle and in turn carries a pair of yarn supplies one which may be the first yarn and one the second, or both the first. When the holder carries both first and second yarn supplies the spindle is operated as a takeup spool and is provided with a traveling-ring arrangement, with the two yarns being pulled off the respective supplies and twisted together. When the holder carries only two supplies of the first yarn the supply of the second yarn can be carried on the spindle, and a separate takeup spool can be provided above the spindle and below the holder. This takeup spool is driven to take up the two yarns and the first yarn is fed from the holder down and then up through the hollow spindle to be twisted with the second yarn that is simultaneously being spun.

  • Patent number: 4114357
Abstract: A thread drawn upwardly from a stationary yarn package into the top of a hollow spindle, exiting from a payoff disk on that spindle below the yarn package and then rising along the inner wall of a balloon-limiting cylinder, is wetted by water entering the top of the cylinder through several peripherally spaced radial wall apertures or through an overhanging spout. An annular trough at the bottom of the cylinder intercepts excess water and returns it to a reservoir for recirculation to a supply channel.

  • Patent number: 4091604
Abstract: A device for the peripheral drive of the yarn-takeup package of a double twisting machine, i.e. a so-called DD twister, comprises a coupling sleeve freely rotatable and axially shiftable on a drive shaft, the coupling sleeve being angularly entrained with the axially fixed winding cylinder and connectible with a hub angularly entrained with the drive shaft. The coupling sleeve is shifted in response to the position of a thread-sensing element from its coupled state into a free-running condition.

  • Patent number: 4068458
Abstract: A twisting apparatus for light and heavy yarns has a conventional twister wherein the yarn packages are supported rotatably on a rotating flyer but is inhibited from rotation by magnets on the yarn-package holder and upright walls surrounding the yarn-package holder. The flyer is rotated at high speed so as to form a yarn balloon around the yarn-package. The walls surrounding the yarn-package holder form a square at their tops and a circle at their bottoms. When heavy-gauge yarns are being twisted an insert in the form of a cylindrical sleeve is fitted within the device to limit the balloon size. An elastomeric ring surrounding the lower portion of the outside of this sleeve is snugly engageable with the frustoconical lower surface of the interior of the surrounding walls so as to hold the sleeve centered in the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4036000
Abstract: A yarn-twisting apparatus has a frame on which is mounted at least one row of identical twisters. Fixed to this machine is a front wall panel extending along the row of twisters from the top of the cups thereof to the bottoms of these cups. Hinged on the upper edge of this front wall panel is one or a plurality of flaps which can move between a vertical position extending upwardly, or a lying-down position giving access to the tops of the twisters. Another such flap is hinged on a second front wall panel below and recessed from the front wall panel so as to be displaceable between an upper position shielding the arrangement and a lowered position giving access to the flyer disks of the twisters. These flaps and panels are all made of sound-deadening material and the various flaps may be subdivided so as to give access to individual twisters while the other flaps are left up so as to shield sound generated by the other twisters.

  • Patent number: 3991546
Abstract: A double-twist apparatus has a support provided with a journal in which is rotatably received a sleeve having an eccentric bore in which is centered the shaft of a twist spindle. A whorl carried on the shaft is engageable with a flat belt and rotation of the eccentric spindle within the fixed journal can move the whorl into and out of engagement with the belt. A lever is provided on the sleeve for angular displacement of this sleeve and a spring normally urges the sleeve into a position corresponding to engagement of the whorl with the belt or disengagement of the two. In the case of the spring urging the sleeve into the engaged position a toggle linkage is provided to hold the device in this position. In the arrangement where it urges the whorl away from the belt a spring-loaded device operated by a thread-tension sensor downstream of the apparatus is provided to stop the device in case of thread rupture. A brake is provided on the spindle shaft to arrest it when it is swung out of engagement with the belt.

  • Patent number: 3983685
Abstract: A thread is pulled off a yarn package and down past a thread brake into a spindle shaft forming part of a rotating structure. The thread exits at the bottom of the shaft from a radial opening in a payoff disk having a frustoconical surface formed with a peripheral groove. The thread passes from below across this groove and is then pulled up between the yarn package and a ballon-limiting cylinder. A reservoir disposed next to this structure is filled with a treatment liquid feeding an applicator whose upper end projects into the groove in the payoff disk. A wick in the applicator tube conducts the liquid up to the tip of the tube and moistens the thread as it passes periodically between this tip and the rotating disk.

  • Patent number: 3938309
Abstract: A spinning apparatus has a flyer which is rotated about its axis by a belt drive at one axial end of a spindle carrying the flyer. Received within the flyer and rotatable relative thereto is a yarn-package holder comprising a plush-lined cup snugly receiving a coreless package of glass-fiber yarn, and a takeup tube whose mouth lies within the package. A thread brake is provided within the takeup tube and the yarn holder is prevented from rotating with the flyer. The yarn of one or more threads is drawn off the inside of the package into the mouth of the nonrotating takeup tube, thence enters the end of the rotating spindle, passes radially out through the flyer under the yarn-package holder, and thence axially out through the rotating sleeve of the flyer. The tube of the flyer is formed by a pair of nested tubes connected by a corrugated stiffening element.
