  • Publication number: 20250059572
Abstract: Direct reduced iron (DRI) is produced at a facility comprising a catalytic reformer physically associated with a vertical shaft furnace. A biogas is produced by anaerobically fermenting an annually renewable biomass, such as corn plant residue (stover). The biogas consists essentially of methane and carbon dioxide (CH4+CO2). The carbon dioxide is retained, and the biogas with the retained carbon dioxide is introduced into the catalytic reformer where the methane is cracked to produce carbon and gaseous hydrogen, a reducing gas (CH4?C+2H2). The retained carbon dioxide in the biogas reacts with the carbon from the cracking step to produce carbon monoxide, another reducing gas (C+CO2?2CO). The two reducing gases are introduced into the vertical shaft furnace to convert iron ore to direct reduced iron. The retention of CO2 in the biogas reduces the amount of recycled top-gas CO2 required at the reformer.

  • Patent number: 11753657
Abstract: Ear corn is picked from corn fields by ear corn harvesters and transported to a central shelling station associated with an ethanol manufacturing facility. Shelled corn from the central shelling station is processed into ethanol at the ethanol manufacturing facility, and corn cobs from the central shelling station are burned to provide process heat for the ethanol manufacturing process. Energy is conserved and costs are reduced during the picking and shelling of the ear corn and by the burning of cobs for process heat.

  • Patent number: 7584530
Abstract: A stream of scrap metal strip is continuously compressed in an apparatus comprising a pair of compression rolls and a traveling shear disposed, in that sequence, along a processing path having a substantial vertical component. The process is performed continuously, and there is no need for the process to be interrupted in order to remove strip parts overhanging the entrance to the compression apparatus.
