    Abstract: A retaining device for a photoreceptive member in a xerographic CRU. The belt in a CRU is retained by the device and held in a shape so that it will slide easily over a drive module without catching on other machine components. The device is made up of a plurality of fingers that hold the belt in position during shipment and installation. Once the CRU is installed and an interlock handle turned, the belt is released from the fingers and is in an operative, supported position on the drive module. To remove the CRU, the interlock mechanism is reversed and the belt is again captured by the fingers and held in a shape to allow easy removal over the drive module.

    Abstract: A xerographic CRU (Customer Relpaceable Unit) for an electrophotographic printing machine. The xerographic CRU has retaining features and cooperates with a drive module with certain retractable features that allow the insertion and removal of the CRU without causing damage to the photoreceptor and other critical subsystems. The unit further has many locating members for other subsystems so that critical tolerances are maintained. An interface with a single handle assembly retracts/unlocks and extends/locks the drive module and the associated CRU subsystems into an operative position. The CRU also has electrical and drive connections for the cleaning system, the charging system and transfer/detack.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing the customer replaceable cleaner subsystem from the electrostatographic machine without spillage of toner and other debris particles. The cleaning subsystem is a hybrid of a disturber brush and a retractable cleaning blade. The cleaning unit is slidably inserted or removed from the machine. The cleaning unit is removed from the machine when a cleaning failure occurs and replaced by a readily available spare cleaning unit. When the cleaning unit is inserted into the machine, adjacent to the photoreceptor, the door panel is slidably opened as the cleaning unit is moved into the appropriate space. The blade is moved into an engaged position with the photoreceptor for cleaning. When the cleaning unit is removed from the printer machine, the blade is retracted and the door panel is slidably closed as the cleaning unit is being removed, providing self-sealing of the cleaner unit and preventing toner and other debris spillage.

    Abstract: An apparatus for cleaning an imaging surface with a hybrid cleaner that includes the implementation of a contamination seal in the cleaner unit. The contamination seal captures falling accumulated toner from the blade edge and in the brush nip, due to gravitation, which contaminates the xerographic area when the cleaner blade and disturber brush are retracted from the imaging surface. The contamination seal rests along the length of the blade portion that extends from the blade holder. In this position, the contamination seal does not touch the imaging surface to cause scratches nor does it interfere with the blade's ability to clean the imaging surface. Implementation of the contamination seal contains toner emission within the cleaner from the blade edge and brush nip.

    Abstract: An apparatus which cleans a moving imaging surface with a cleaning blade and automatically detects a failure of the cleaning blade. A failure sensing mechanism detects the cleaning blade failure and activates a blade indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism removes the failed cleaning blade and positions a new cleaning blade in a wiping or doctoring mode frictional contact with the imaging surface for cleaning. A brush positioned upstream of the cleaning blade, in the direction of movement of the imaging surface, disturbs the particles thereon.

    Abstract: An apparatus for cleaning residual toner and debris from a moving charge retentive surface of an image forming apparatus includes a multiple turret style blade holder located such that an individual blade is selectively indexed into optimum position for cleaning the moving photoreceptor. The blade holder contains a number of cleaning blades mounted radially from a central core and by rotating the holder about its longitudinal axis a specified number of degrees (360.degree./number of cleaning blades on the holder) a new cleaning blade is moved by the indexing device into the cleaning position to replace a failed blade. The indexing device removes the failed cleaning blade and positions a new cleaning blade in frictional contact with the photoreceptor for cleaning.
