  • Patent number: 5896248
Abstract: A magnetic head assembly has a plurality of slider electrical bond pads arranged in a first configuration on a top surface opposite the air bearing surface of a slider. A plurality of slider mechanical bond pads are arranged in a second configuration on the top surface of the slider. A plurality of flexure electrical bond pads are arranged in a third configuration on a bottom surface of a flexure. The third configuration and the first configuration are such that the slider electrical bond pads mate with the flexure electrical bond pads. A plurality of flexure mechanical bond pads are arranged in a fourth configuration on the bottom surface of the flexure. The fourth configuration and the second configuration are such that the slider mechanical bond pads mate with the flexure mechanical bond pads. Slider-to-flexure weld joints join the flexure electrical bond pads to the slider electrical bond pads. Slider-to-wire weld joints join the flexure mechanical bond pads to the slider mechanical bond pads.

  • Patent number: 5877923
Abstract: A magnetic head suspension assembly includes a load beam which enables a close disk-to-disk spacing in a disk drive, high production yield, and increased torsional stiffness and resistance to vibrational modes. The load beam has a low profile, high resonance configuration, which minimizes the overall size of the magnetic head suspension assembly, and which improves manufacturability and robustness of magnetic head suspension assemblies by increasing the load beam resonance frequency and reducing the oscillation gain. The load beam is formed with a forward section that extends rearwardly into a central major section, a flexure secured to the forward section, and an air bearing slider secured to the flexure for free gimbaling motion while flying above an associated disk during operation in a disk drive. The forward section of the load beam covers substantially the entire surface of said flexure to provide it with sufficient rigidity and support.

  • Patent number: 5870258
Abstract: A magnetic head suspension assembly for transducing data from and onto a surface of a rotating magnetic disk includes a load beam for supplying a directed force to a slider, so as to maintain the slider at a desired height above the disk surface. A flexure is secured to the load beam, and is formed of a flexible dielectric layer on which a pattern of conductive traces are formed. These conductive traces are patterned for providing sufficient flexibility in various degrees of movement and stiffness to resist physical deformation, for imparting optimal mechanical and structural support to the slider and to the load beam, and for electrically connecting the slider to read/write electronic circuitry. In the preferred embodiment, the dielectric layer is made of a polymeric resinous material, such as polyimide, and the conductive traces are made of copper.

  • Patent number: 5825589
Abstract: A low stiffness apparatus supporting a read/write transducer head slider for reduced pitch and roll bias in flying conditions. The apparatus comprises an actuator arm, a load beam, and a flexure in combination. The flexure is comprised of an outer portion, an inner portion, and a bight portion. The bight portion connects the inner portion to the outer portion and provides a one step double bend resulting in a spaced relation between the inner and outer portions along the z-axis. The inner portion also has a dimple formed therein for pivoting against the load beam and is located substantially near the bight. The low stiffness is created from the bight portion and the location of the dimple. The apparatus also prevents the problem of wire overhang, where the wire crashes onto the disc during flying conditions. The apparatus furthermore permits the transducer head slider to move more closely to the hub of the disc, thus allowing the system to read more data.

  • Patent number: 5796558
Abstract: A disk drive has a head stack assembly with head arms which extend between adjacent magnetic disks. Each head arm includes head gimbal assemblies. The head arm is capable of pivoting about a first axis of rotation for providing the head gimbal assembly with a macro-actuation movement relative to a selected track on a disk, and for positioning the head gimbal assembly in an initial position relative to the selected track. A micro-actuator is connected to the head gimbal assembly so that the head gimbal assembly is pivotally secured to the head arm about a second axis independently of the pivotal movement of the head arm. This provides the head gimbal assembly with a micro-actuation movement relative to the selected track, such that if there is skew between the head gimbal assembly and the track, a micro-actuator provides correction to minimize the skew angle. Also the micro-actuator provides cancellation of transient and harmonic vibrations.

  • Patent number: 5602699
Abstract: A gimbal assembly of a magnetic head suspension includes a flexure having a dimple. A slider carrying a magnetic transducer is attached to the flexure and in contact with the dimple. The flexure has a polygon shape with cutouts defining a plurality of internal and external strut members. Each strut member is elongated in shape with a substantial uniform width. The flexure has a wider midsection than its end sections. When the slider flies above the disk surface over a thin air film, pivoting against the dimple, the flexure provides sufficient agility for the slider to accommodate the uneven topology of the disk surface, yet the flexure is enough stiff to resist any physical deformation that could be caused by the rapid movements of the actuator arm carrying the gimbal assembly.

  • Patent number: 5568332
Abstract: A magnetic head suspension assembly is fabricated with a flexure that is formed with a U-shaped finger surrounded by a cutout at the front end of the flexure. A load dimple is provided on the flexure. The flexure supports an air bearing slider that pitches and rolls relative to a disk surface and is subject to lateral displacement during operation in a disk drive. The flexure is formed with primary stabilizer sections and secondary stabilizer arms which reduce pitch and roll stiffnesses while increasing lateral stiffness, thereby maintaining a substantially constant slider flying height.
