  • Patent number: 7079730
Abstract: A hybrid optoelectronic device and method of producing the hybrid device in which the hybrid device includes a substrate with an input region configured to accept input light, a sol-gel glass multimode interference region coupled to and contiguous with the input region and configured to accept and replicate the input light as multiple self-images, and a sol-gel glass output region contiguous with the multimode region and configured to accept and to output the multiple self-images. Alternatively, the hybrid optoelectronic device includes a substrate with a photoelectronic device, a surface resonator including a light-emitting part of the photelectronic device and configured to resonate light from the photoelectronic device to produce a laser light, and a grating outcoupler contiguous with the surface resonator and configured to diffract the laser light outward from the grating outcoupler and to electrically vary an index of refraction of the outcoupler and change a direction of the diffracted laser light.

  • Patent number: 6908723
Abstract: A photo-patternable perfluorinated silane sol-gel material is presented that exhibits a high refractive index and propagation losses below 1 dB/cm at the telecommunication wavelengths. The sol-gels are produced with general formula [(CH2)n,R?—Si(O)2]x—[Si(O)4]y—[R?—Si(O)3]z—[R?(CH2)n—M(O)3]w—[R??(CH2)n—Si(O)3]v where O is oxygen, Si is silicon, M is a metal alkoxyde known to form bonds with organic compounds through oxygen donor ligands, and where , R? and R?? are photo cross-linkable groups, and where (CH2)n are alkyl spacers with n being an integer ?0. The sol-gels can be fabricated to produce complex waveguide structures directly onto silica-on-silicon substrates with low bending losses.

  • Patent number: 6054253
Abstract: The process for fabricating a ridge waveguide on a substrate uses a photosensitive sol-gel glass material prepared, according to a first embodiment, by mixing methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (H.sub.2 C.dbd.C(CH.sub.3)CO.sub.2 (CH.sub.2).sub.3 Si(OCH.sub.3).sub.3) and methacrylic acid (H.sub.2 C.dbd.C(CH.sub.3)COOH) or, according to a second embodiment, by mixing methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (H.sub.2 C.dbd.C(CH.sub.3)CO.sub.2 (CH.sub.2).sub.3 Si(OCH.sub.3).sub.3) with bis(s-butoxy)aluminoxytriethoxysilane. A thick film of photosensitive sol-gel glass material is first dip coated on at least a portion of the substrate. A photomask is applied to the film of photosensitive sol-gel glass material, and this sol-gel material is exposed to ultraviolet radiation through the opening(s) of the photomask to render a portion of the film insoluble to a given solvent and thereby imprint the ridge waveguide in that film.
