Publication number: 20110013537Abstract: A forecast model processes performance data from a site, e.g., a cable modem termination system (CMTS), to obtain a set of concurrency equations for existing speed tiers that is based on an observed subscriber bandwidth for the site. A new set of concurrency equations is obtained for new speed tiers so that a new subscriber bandwidth can be predicted for the new speed tiers. Based on the new subscriber bandwidth, expected subscriber growth, and changes in data consumption, the site is reconfigured with additional ports based on the forecast. This process can be repeated for the other sites. Sites may be grouped together based on the observed subscriber bandwidth. A new subscriber bandwidth may be predicted for the group with the new speed tiers so that additional ports can be configured for each of the sites in the group.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 16, 2009Publication date: January 20, 2011Applicant: Comcast Cable Communications, LLCInventors: John Paclik, Amit Garg, Saifur Rahman

Publication number: 20100058424Abstract: A system and method for controlling the transmission of signals within an interactive network which transmits audio/visual (A/V) information on at least one channel to a user and including a transmission source configured to transmit the A/V information on the at least one channel is provided. The system includes at least one set-top box and at least one random number generator. The set-top box is configured to record the A/V information on a channel at a predetermined recording time and to transmit a change channel request signal to the transmission source prior to the predetermined recording time to change the channel to record the A/V information at the predetermined recording time. The random number generator is configured to generate a time value such that the at least one set-top box transmits the change channel request signal to the transmission source at the time value prior to the predetermined recording time.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 26, 2008Publication date: March 4, 2010Applicant: COMCAST CABLE HOLDINGS, LLCInventor: Amit Garg

Patent number: 7627322Abstract: A method of call forwarding a call originally placed to a mobile telephone number of a mobile telephone to a landline telephone number of a landline telephone is provided, wherein the call is routed through a telephone network by a service provider. A forwarding location of the mobile telephone is determined using a mobile location technology. The landline telephone number of the landline telephone is provided to the service provider. A current mobile telephone location is determined by a mobile location technology. The mobile location technology is capable of locating the mobile telephone using service provider equipment. The service provider determines that the call is being made to the mobile telephone when the current mobile telephone location is at the forwarding location. The call to the mobile telephone number is forwarded to the landline telephone number when the current mobile telephone location is at the forwarding location.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2007Date of Patent: December 1, 2009Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Barry S. Patent number: 6987840Abstract: An integrated message management system that allows a subscriber to retrieve voice mail messages using a voice mail or email server, and that also updates the status of messages on both servers upon retrieval of the message from either server. The voice mail server is accessed via a local exchange carrier, whereas the email server is accessed via the Internet. The email server also notifies the subscriber of the presence of a new message. When the subscriber retrieves a voice mail message, the email server updates the status of the corresponding email message. Similarly, when a subscriber retrieves an email message, the voice mail server updates the status of the corresponding voice mail message. This eliminates the need for a subscriber to manually change the status of corresponding messages to “clean out” a voice mail or email box when the other is accessed.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2001Date of Patent: January 17, 2006Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventors: Barry S. Publication number: 20040120475Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing and retrieving voicemail with a calling card is presented. A calling card is implemented with at least two personal identification numbers (PINs). A calling-card platform prompts a calling-card user to enter a PIN number. If a first PIN number is entered, options are presented that enable the calling-card user to record a voice message greeting, record a voicemail, retrieve a voicemail left by a caller, complete a call, or access account information. If a second PIN number is entered, the call is switched to a voice-messaging platform. At the voice-messaging platform, the calling-card user is prompted to record a voicemail message for the calling-card owner.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2002Publication date: June 24, 2004Inventors: Thomas Michael Bauer, Amit Garg, Rajeev B. Patent number: 6650734Abstract: In a telephone network for use in placing telephone calls to a destination number associated with a called party, the destination number having restricted access for collect telephone calls, a system and method for providing a message to the called party of a collect telephone call from a calling party. A caller placing a collect telephone call is notified of the restricted access of the destination number for collect telephone calls and provided with an option for recording a message for delivery to the called party. If the calling party accepts the option, a message is recorded, such as by routing the collect telephone call to a messaging platform for use in recording the message.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2002Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: AT&T CorporationInventors: Suzette Drouillard, Carol P. Publication number: 20030179743Abstract: A call management method that provides for handling, according to subscriber-designated preferences, an incoming voice call to the subscriber while logged on a network. When the subscriber occupies a line, the method includes activating an Internet presence server that determines online status by checking IP activity at the subscriber's IP address. If the subscriber is online and has indicated a preference to accept calls, a pop-up screen is activated at the subscriber's terminal to display menu options to handle the call, such as answering via VoIP, text-to-speech synthesis, forwarding the call to a specific number, or sending the call to voicemail. A voicemail message may also be sent to an e-mail account as an audio file or as a pager alert with short message text. Certain management features may be disabled dynamically in response to the on-line status of the subscriber.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2001Publication date: September 25, 2003Inventors: Barry S. Bosik, Amit Garg, Rajeev B. Patil, Jeffrey L. Tuttle

Publication number: 20030112930Abstract: A call management system responsive to subscriber preferences for handling incoming voice calls of a subscriber having on-line IP network capability. When the subscriber occupies a line, a controller activates an Internet presence server that determines online status by checking IP activity at the subscriber's IP address. If the subscriber is online and has indicated a preference to accept calls, the controller activates a pop-up screen at the subscriber's terminal to display menu options to handle the call, such as answering via VoIP, text-to-speech synthesis, forwarding the call to a specific number, or sending the call to voicemail. A voicemail message may also be sent to an email account as an audio file or as a pager alert with short message text. The system may be centrally located within a network or integrated with subscriber premises equipment. Certain management features may also be disabled dynamically in response to on-line status.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2001Publication date: June 19, 2003Inventors: Barry S. Patent number: 6144945Abstract: A computer implemented process is provided for fast and accurate evaluation of the performance characteristics of the periodic-review (s,S) inventory policy with complete back ordering. This policy has an underlying stochastic process that is a renewal process. The method provides a novel computer implementation of a fast and accurate way to compute approximations of the renewal function. In order to overcome the computational problems in evaluating renewal functions numerically, an approximation scheme has been devised whereby the renewal function of the truncated normal distribution can be characterized by two parameters: (1) its coefficient of variation, and (2) the point at which the function needs to be evaluated. This approximation is derived in two stages. In the first stage, a class of rational polynomial approximations are developed to the renewal function, called Pade approximants.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1997Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Amit Garg, Jayant Ramarao Kalagnanam
